Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Can I go back to an older OS?

I upgraded to Yosemite in the early autumn. My 2011 iMac has always had a tendency to crash (programs or whole computer) but that increased after installing Yosemite. I never upgraded to Mavericks though. I think I was using Snow Leopard before.

iMac, iOS 7.0.4

Thanks Lex!

Which brings me back to my original question, which no one has answered yet . . . do you think this crashing and corruption of Lightroom catalogs is more likely caused by the memory cards I added to my machine soon after I bought it or because of Yosemite?

None of the two, not the OS or the RAM. But software, definitely!

Now

After making sure that your data on the two drives are safe, ie BACKUP.

Disconnect the two external WD Drives.

There is a nice little utility app called AppCleaner which you can use to get rid of Tascam and Western Digital Utilities.

Ensure that you download it from a reputable source, no Torrent site or untrustworthy source.

Select the two offending Software packages, make sure nothing else is also selected by accident, and get rid of it.

Restart the machine.

Connect one of the Drives. If the software installs again. Follow the procedure again with the drive connected. Be sure that you have a backup.

Now the other Drive.

Afterwards we can run EtreCheck again, and see what the status is.

I went to see if I could find this WD software in the apps folder. I clicked on the WD drive utilities, not noticing it is an app, thinking it was a folder, and go this (se screenshot). I canceled it out, but I thought it answered your question about whether I'd updated. (I had no idea. Unlike other software that informs me when updates are available, I didn't even know of the existence of this WD software on my computer!)

Now I googled AppCleaner. How do a know a source is reputable? What is a "torrent site"? Is this one good? http://www.freemacsoft.net/appcleaner/

Jan 13, 2015 9:25 AM in response to Lexiepex

Lex wrote yesterday: (why can't I find a quote function?)

michele, all that is cripling your mac has been said in this thread already: but a lot of apps or remnants are still there.

I will list them again:

Akamai,

WD software,

Tascam,

ALL Safari extensions,

Director Shockwave,

Fuze and Fuze extension,

HP tocgenerator,

And last but not least:

in Finder click the GO menu, in there click GoToFolder, fill in (copy/paste): /private/etc/

in that folder you find an file called sysctl.conf delete that file (be careful in this etc folder).

After all that, restart, empty the trash, run a new etrecheck list so that we can check if all is gone completely.

-------------------------------------

So I have used AppCleaner to delete the WD Utilities app, the WD Security app, a couple other apps I noticed that I don't believe I need, and Akamai (I've wondered what Akamai is, does anyone know?). I do not see the Safari extensions, Director Shockwave, Fuze, or anything HP. AND I just followed Lex's directions to delete sysctl.conf (What is it?)

Would a new Etrecheck be useful at this point?

Jan 13, 2015 9:29 AM in response to iphonemichele

On a related note, maybe you can explain something that has baffled me for years about my Finder. As you can see, I have Applications in my Favorites in the sidebar and you can see lots of apps.

User uploaded file

However, if click on my user "michelekendzie" the applications folder is empty. (It actually used to have Akamai in it, until I just deleted it a few minutes ago.) If I open this folder, it's empty.

What's going on?

Oops, I didn't reconnect the EHD before I ran the Etrecheck. Well, here's the result without the EHD.

There are 2 applications folders, the one in your user account only has things that you deliberately installed there in it. And they are then only available to you. (Which if you are the only user is irrelevant)

And (judging by the report) nothing has been removed correctly. Akamai, Tascam, WD software et al are all still there (I assume that you did reboot before a new report)

Jan 13, 2015 10:06 AM in response to Csound1

Yes, I restarted the computer and emptied the trash before doing the EtreCheck. What else can I do?

Here's the test after I plugged the EHD back in and deleted the WD Security app with AppCleaner (I thought I already had the first time around, but found it there still).

Take a look at that list, everything without a line through needs to go, and go correctly. Appcleaner is clearly not doing it so go to the various vendors websites, get the correct instructions for removing this junk and follow it exactly.

It is very important to understand what you are doing before downloading stuff, you have already told us that there is software on your Mac that you knew nothing about. Is someone else using the Mac, or are you just pressing the yes button regardless?

I thought the first ones on that list are drivers for the EHD and that I need drivers for an EHD I'm using. No?

The only thing I said I didn't know was there is the WD utilities and that doesn't mean I'm surprised, since I know my EHD is a WD. I do only download things that I want for the activities that I do. For example, I have attended photography webinars that require a certain program to run. My husband and two daughters also have accounts on this machine, but they don't use it very much and haven't downloaded much, if anything.

I'll go see what I can find at the vendor websites.

Can I go back to an older OS?
