System time (Clock) changes on iPhone 5c

Hi everybody,

a friend recently encounters a very strange problem with his iPhone 5c. Without any reason, the clock time on the phone changes. Not full-hours-wise (like a wrong time zone) but apparently completely arbitrary - the clock then displays completely wrong times. Sometimes the clock continues running from that wrong time, sometimes it remains static for a while on a particular time. This is of course a real pain, particularly if the iPhone should be used as an alarm clock...

The phenomenon is completely independent from the "set automatically" setting in "date & time" - it even occurs if the time was set manually. It is also independent from the phone being logged into a Wifi network or if it's just online in a mobile network. It has also nothing to do with synchronizing with a PC that has a wrong system time (this appears to be the most frequently cited comment in this issue).

Sometimes it helps for a couple of minutes if "set automatically" in "date & time" is switched off and on again. Sometimes! ;-) And even if it helps and the time gets set correctly, it only takes a couple of minutes and the clock show a wrong time again.

We have tried all kinds of stuff to solve the problem: Stop all running apps (in case on of it has gone bonkers). Switch the phone off and on again. Switch flight mode off and on. Switch Wifi off and on. Switch mobile data off and on. Let the battery run completely empty, then recharge and switch the phone on again. All to no avail... The last desperate try (which I really hoped would be successful) was a hard reset (set back to factory settings via cable and iTunes and then replay the last backup). The time was ok after that - but just for a few minutes, then it changed again...

Has anybody any idea of what this strange behavior could be all about? Anybody had a similar problem? Anybody with a genius (sic!) solution? Or at least a hint what else we could try?!

Oh yes, the phone runs iOS 8.1.2 and is about 15 months old - bought directly at German Telekom.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Best regards,

TCF

I contacted apple support over the phone. They seemed interested in helping me. I tried all the resets again to appease them even though I had done them before and nothing worked. The support rep told me to go to the store and that it sounded as though it was a software compatibility issue. And that if it was the case they would swap for $100.

Made the appointment and went to the genius bar. When I told them what I was there for, they smiled and laughed at each other and said "oh that". When the guy came to help me. He took the phone did a hard reset (Home and Front buttons) and said if you have already reinstalled the iOS it must be a hardware issue and you phone is out of warranty. I can get you a replacement for $259.00. I asked how it could be a hardware issue when it started only after iOS 8 update? He just fed me a line of crap about how the new software was a larger file and that it was now occupying a location on the device that is corrupt so it only showed after the new larger file was installed..... I explained that this was complete BS and he just said the bottom line is he was not going to do anything for me other then the out of warranty replacement @ $259.00

Is anyone aware of any way to reinstall iOS 7.1.2 to see if it fixes the issue? My $ says it would....

Thank you. Very interesting! It is so amazing that they make tons of $$$ on these devices that people use for 2 years and move on, yet they can't replace a device that is obviously not going to work!

Just happened to turn the 5c back on today and saw that there is an 8.3 update so that's going now but I don't expect it will fix anything.

I never had a wifi issue. The bluetooth problem was driving me crazy because my fitbit wouldn't sync. I could almost deal with that and even the time issue since I don't use the alarms but it all started going downhill and texts and calls were acting up so I had to stop using it. I would reactivate it now if it would just be bluetooth and time issue because the 4 is so darn slow!

Considering Fitbit devices do not work with iPhone 4, there is no problem.

You need iPhone 4S or later. They use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) as does the Fitbit.

The iPhone 4 does not use BLE so they will not work with Fitbit devices.

I have been having the same issues with the time. Nothing works. The date/time setting does not hold. And the WiFi doesn't seem to be working either. Even though I am connected, it eats my data. I have talked to Apple with no luck of course. It isn't specific to Version like I have seen in other posts because I am using ATT. I am so frustrated! Nothing seems to work. I am hoping ATT will replace the phone since it's not under warranty through Apple. This whole thing makes me want to throw up!
