OS X 10.6.8 and Skype says I need 10.9.
Do I have to upgrade the O/S?
Suggestions?
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
try this with skype 6.15 & os 10.6.8:
</array>
<key>CFBundleVersion</key>
<string>6.15.0.335</string>
Replace with:
</array>
<key>CFBundleVersion</key>
<string>7.36.0.507</string>
6. Then go to File and click on Save, or press Command+S
7. Re-open Skype
i found it in another forum, it works.
Also, Google "Skype on OS 10.6.8" and a bunch of solutions come up on other forums. All of the Skype versions you ever downloaded should be in your "downloads" file if you have not deleted them. Downloads are in your home > downloads or in your dock. Home > Downloads > Skype you can see all versions dmgs listed. Trash your current version, from your downloads open the 6.15.0.335 or 6.15.0.334 and reload it. Then try my previous instructions.
Thanks gallion1!
Your instructions to change and save the new version numbers have worked for me. In all other instructions that I have come across one piece was missing which made it impossible for me to work out. So thanks a lot, I am now able to log into the skype app. The thing now is that none (except one) of my contacts are there. Did you have this problem? what did you do to get them back? When I log into the web version of skype all my contacts are there and I can text them but I can't call them and they can't call me, it just drops the call when I answer, or when I click them to make the call. Same for video or without.
So, I have 'searched' for some of my contacts in the 'add contact' section in the app and have been able to send requests to some but not all of my contacts. Some of the contacts it simply won't even find, even tho' I have them on the web version and communicate with them frequently.
Of the contacts I find, some have called successfully, and I have called them, but my app doesn't recognize them as a contact. They are still greyed out with the question mark and 'Pending Contact' next to their name. I have one contact that I am successfully connected to, so I know that it's working somewhere in there but I can't work out why my skype won't accept the other contacts. Any ideas about that? Further, some of the contacts that I have been able to send requests to are showing our previous conversation history, even tho' they are not recognised as a contact.
Of course it would be better still if there was a button I could click and all of my original contacts reappeared.
Thanks a lot for all of your help, you've saved me a massive headache so far.
Thanks mosflm!
I have finally managed to get the app working but it's lost all of my contacts!
I replied to Gallion1 about that below. Not sure if you would have insights about where the contacts have gone or how to get them back?
Thanks again for all of your help, you guys are saving me big headaches!
When you open Skype, click on "Contacts" in the left column and click on "Skype" on the top bar. All of your previous contacts should be there. If not click on "All" and everyone in your address book should appear. Click on the picture of the contact and the contact should appear. Click on the little video icon and a call will be attempted and fail if they are not on line. Then click on "send a video message" and send your invitation to join.
Where does it say that? This page:
http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-computer/
says it will run on 10.5.8 and above.
I have this problem too.
The latest Skype version does say on the download page, that it should be compatible with OS X 10.6.8
But on trying to install Skype message says I need OS X 10.9 minimum, so the download page is incorrect.
Rather than upgrading to Mavericks or Yosemite, I'm going to look for an older version of Skype for OS X 10.6.8
Hello
Did you find a version that works? I have this problem too and none of the old versions that I have installed will open. Driving me crazy.
If you click THIS link:
http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-mac/downloading/
it will download immediately from the site that Roger gave you.

EDIT: THIS IS THE WRONG ONE, HERE IS THE CORRECT VERSION (V6):

Thanks. I tried the appropriate link, but still no luck. I have a mac version 10.6 so I tried the appropriate download (10.6 - 10.8). The first part of the error message I get is:

Did you completely uninstall the new Skype version that would not work before you installed this old version 6?
hello
Yes, I've moved everything to the trash and emptied the trash. Then I searched for all skype related files and deleted them. This is the closest I can find to the Uninstall option on windows...
still trying...
thanks for your messages
No you don´t have to but you can upgrade your OS at any point in time.
I still heavily enjoy my 10.6.8 and Skype Skype 615 (335) but boot from ElCap on an external HD, when needed.
The minimum System Requirement for any Skype 7+ is 10.9.
So I am sure that some issues ( like Skype not updating on quit ) are caused by this.
Upgrading is FREE (its not windows!)
I have never had any problems on EL Capitan and it includes the new versions of safari (old and outdated browsers can't load modern web pages very good)
*The update in the app store just search it.
also do a back up just in case.
🙂
Thank you so much Roger,
Sincerely yours
Ben Ngong
