How to Skype with OS X 10.6.8?

OS X 10.6.8 and Skype says I need 10.9.

Do I have to upgrade the O/S?

Suggestions?

Skype has changed around the end of November 2017 (worked for me on 29th, not on 30th) - I got the message that I need to upgrade the OS (which won't work for my 32-bit iMac...). Apfelmuseins' answer from July 12th should now read (note the only difference from that is the CFBundleVersion needs to be 8.11.0.4 rather than 7.36.0.507)

try this with skype 6.15 & os 10.6.8:

  1. Quit Skype
  2. Go to Applications Folder in Finder and Right Click on the Skype icon
  3. Select "Show Package Contents"
  4. Click on Info.plist
  5. Scroll Down until you locate Locate these 3 lines:

</array>

<key>CFBundleVersion</key>

<string>6.15.0.335</string>

Replace with:

</array>

<key>CFBundleVersion</key>

<string>8.11.0.4</string>

6. Then go to File and click on Save, or press Command+S

7. Re-open Skype

Then Skype worked for me.

Actually, be careful with this solution guys.
I tried it, it did allow me to open Skype 6 on 10.6 system and connect to skype, and even send messages. But for me, voice or video calls did not work. I suspect some other features won't work either.

Again, f****k Skype.

Try ICQ for Mac OS X with free video calls, messaging, group chat and Facebook support , it's better anyway 🙂

I needed to open Skype today, after not being able to login stupid me hit update and of course it pulls down the newest version which is incompatible. luckily I save copies of all app installs, even a handful of versions.

this trick worked like a charm.

then I proceed to go and test it by logging in on my iphone4s with my other account, where it tells me this nice thing about "Color your world. It's your app. Why not make it colorful?" LOL

text chat works, although it took a while to propagate that I was online.

audio or video calling out on the other hand sent a message that said " 'your contact' might not receive your call on all their devices as 'contact' is calling using an out of date version of Skype. Get the latest version of Skype at website…" calling in came up with your party cannot be reached.

{ theoretically as this message is being sent to the person you are contacting, they may already be using the highest current version of Skype wondering why they keep getting this error. talk about bad programming. }

which means I don't really have a reason to have Skype anymore and I might as well delete my 3 accounts ( oh one of them's a Microsoft account, I can't darn ).

I guess Microsoft finally killed Skype.

getting the newest version of something is not security, it is security theater! and one more step it will be you can only use it on X platforms.

to use "Property List Editor" from Xcode.

open the info.plist file in Property List Editor.

look for "Bundle version".

Replace "6.15.0.335" with "7.36.0.507"

Save.

Can't figure how to edit post.

Pick any color… out of 5. LOL

according to the update description on IOS "were listening to your feedback and we're working hard to improve Skype"

so go give them a one star review.

also it won't let me log in on my iphone 3GS and just keeps saying cannot connect to skype.

I really need to spin up a virtual mac machine to run newer apps.

Thanks. I tried the appropriate link, but still no luck. I have a mac version 10.6 so I tried the appropriate download (10.6 - 10.8). The first part of the error message I get is:
