Well, I'm just an everyday USER - I don't give advice to other folk here!

You have helped me in the past, Linc (I had my hard drive replaced on your advice!) and I respect your opinions.

My computer APPEARS to be working well now - but I AM concerned about the red entries the Etrecheck scan throws up.

Please let me know if there's anything amiss from what you can see in my full report. Thanks.

That's one of the problems that EtreCheck is designed to fix. 🙂

There are no "qualifications" required to contribute to Apple Support Communities. If you are a user of Apple's products and have some expertise in some area, then there is almost always someone else who may know less. Why not help them if you can? Nobody knows everything about all products. Some people only answer questions about iPhones and other people only answer questions about Final Cut Pro, for example. I think everyone has some specific area of expertise where they could help someone else. One of the barriers to that is finding out basic information about the other person's machine. Do they have enough RAM to run Final Cut Pro? Does their machine even support Handoff? Is their hard drive failing? Can they upgrade their RAM? These are the kinds of basic information that EtreCheck is designed to easily answer so you can provide faster, more accurate help to someone else.

EtreCheck was designed specifically to help people who are answering questions here on Apple Support Communities. That is why it rarely provides specific information except in the most obvious cases like low RAM or a failing hard drive. In most cases, the "red" entries are simply there to encourage someone to ask about them and engage with some other community member who can help them identify and correct the actual problem.

From Linc's perspective, EtreCheck does generate really dismal results - because it helps people he considers unqualified help other people solve problems with their Apple products. As far as plagiarism is concerned, EtreCheck is open source and anyone is welcome to review the source code to see if there are any similarities between EtreCheck and any of Linc's scripts.

Many thanks for your comprehensive response! 😉

I installed SMC Fan Control at the time when I was having spinning beachballs at every move and my computer was getting far too hot!

Replacing my hard drive put an end to that! (diagnosed by Linc Davis!)

I decided to keep SMC Fan Control for times in the summer when my study sometimes gets too warm!

At present, I have no known problems with my machine. Thanks again for all your helpful advice. :-)

Perhaps other folk will benefit from this thread!

Perhaps other folk will benefit from this thread!

That is indeed the entire idea behind marking a post Solved. If someone does have a similar question and finds a solved topic on the same subject, the resolution is right at the top with the original question. Then they don't have to wade through (sometimes) very long threads to find the answer.

Hello Kurt - thanks for your post! 🙂

I'm going way off-topic now!

I have been 'notified' by email when folk have responded in this thread. When I 'click' on a link in the email to find this place again - nothing happens!

So - I copied the link and pasted it into my Google Chrome browser so I can read the URL destination. This is what I see .......

https://btmail.bt.com/cp/applink/mail/LoadMessageContent?cKey=1421685174087-1133 7&iframeID=x-mail-msg-iframe-box-1421685174246&cw=892#27496646

The link doesn't 'work' in Chrome either!

How can I correct matters? Any thoughts?

Jan 19, 2015 11:01 AM in response to HunterBD

So why does that not work for ME?!!! 😕

Do you mean why do the links not work, or why you cannot find your screen shots?

If the latter, the OS is saving them somewhere. The question is where, if not on the desktop? You can use Terminal to set the location back to the desktop. Open Terminal and copy/paste this line into the app:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Desktop

It may ask for your admin account password. Type it in and press Enter.

Then this one.

killall SystemUIServer

Close Terminal.

If you mean why aren't email links jumping you to your browser and loading the page, that I can't answer as easily. When you hover over the link in the email, does it show the URL it's supposed to bring you to?

Jan 19, 2015 2:40 PM in response to Kurt Lang

I actually meant why don't I see my screenshot on my desktop as you suggested I would!

I'll try you 'fix' in due course - ** I'm busy with grandchildren tomorrow (and now it's time for my bed!). Thanks, though. :-)

I never see 'prospective' links in Safari. This is where I'm 'sent' in Chrome (but it doesn't work!) https://btmail.bt.com/cp/applink/mail/LoadMessageContent?cKey=1421706659641-1144 9&iframeID=x-mail-msg-iframe-box-1421706659774&cw=982#27507215

I'll be back! Your help appreciated! :-)

Jan 21, 2015 7:47 AM in response to Kurt Lang

Hi Kurt - so sorry for the delay.

Well - I did as you suggested in Terminal, but there was no change. Once again the result was "copied to my Clipboard" - https://www.dropbox.com/s/m5bdmr5w7dy9be4/Screenshot%202015-01-21%2015.31.16.png ?dl=0

There was no request for my password.

FYI, I 'Switched User' to a virtually unused 'User' on this machine. I carried out the copy action as you had previously explained (cmd/shift/4) and it WORKED, just as you had said it should - a copy was, indeed, placed on to my desktop! 🙂

Any more action you can suggest?

Jan 21, 2015 8:33 AM in response to Kurt Lang

Hello again, Kurt :-)

That's something I just don't know .......... unless it's Dropbox itself! I've had a look in it's 'settings' but haven't spotted anything.

The full scan I posted here some days ago shows what I have got installed on this machine. Have you had a quick look up there ^^^^^^^^?

I've just done a 'permissions' repair - this was the result:-

I appreciate you trying to help. Thanks. 🙂

Not all that surprising, and does again confirm a preference in your normal account is causing screen shots to go to the clipboard instead of as a file. Safe Mode only allows certain fonts and OS functions to run. Everything else is turned off, including any personal OS behavioral changes in the user preferences.

I'm just not sure which preference file would hold the setting which causes screen shots to go to the clipboard.

You could check to see that the screen shots are going where intended by using OnyX. Download the Yosemite version and launch the app. You'll be pestered by a few screens on the first launch. If you don't want the app to do the two drive check functions, you can turn those off in its preferences.

With OnyX up, click the Parameters heading. Towards the bottom, you'll see a choice for what file type screen shots are saved as (PNG by default), and where they go to. The path should be:

/Users/your_user_account/Desktop

Which is the same as ~/Desktop in the command you tried earlier. If it's not pointing to your user account desktop, click the Select button and change it.
