Hi 😕

Here's an extract from a recent Etrecheck scan - should this be of any cause for concern?

A good thought, Kurt!

However, after practicing a bit, it doesn't seem to matter WHICH combination of keys I press, all 'saves' are to the Clipboard, not to a file (desktop). 😕

THOUGHT ⚠ - Is there any facility (like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHKDSKin MS Windows) which can check all the files/settings on an OS X machine?

Why, YES - yes there IS!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsck

Perhaps I should seek some guidance before attempting to use the facility!

Are you familiar with this check?

Advice welcomed!

Not really on fsck. That's short for File System Check, and is the Unix namesake of the old MS-DOS chkdsk. It checks the file system of the disk for errors and corrects them if possible. But that's as far as it goes. It checks the validity of the data on the drive, not what any of them do.

Checking the System Preferences to see if the keyboard shortcuts had somehow been changed was going to be my next suggestion (and should have thought of long ago), but I see by your latest screen shot, you already did that.

Still looking to see why your screen shots are being directed to the clipboard instead of as a file. We do know it's account related since a new account behaves normally.

Are you using the small utility Dropbox? That will redirect all screen shots to the clipboard unless you change its settings or remove it. If you are running Dropbox, go to Dropbox, Settings, Preferences, Import and uncheck "Share screenshots using Drop Box.

See my post of Jan 21, 2015 4:33 PM 😝

Yes - I DO use Dropbox!!!

This is what I said .... "That's something I just don't know .......... unless it's Dropbox itself! I've had a look in it's 'settings' but haven't spotted anything."

Next ......... Should the apparent 'links' - shown blue in the emails Apple sends to me (to show you have replied here) - actually 'work'? The 'grey' link shown here DOES work!

I don't seem to have the same 'Preferences' to which you referred, Kurt. Odd.

Perhaps we should leave this now and move on?

The 'grey' link, shown here, DOES work! https://www.dropbox.com/s/wp18kdy4r5g2orq/From%20Apple%27s%20emails.tiff?dl=0

You may have noticed some 'spinning gear wheels earlier! I saved the two screen snippets (in the links above) onto my desktop using Apple's 'Grab' application. I then dragged them into this place and saw the green box you had told me about previously; I dropped them in, but it seems they never actually got here! 😠

As a consequence, I have now found the 'preferences' to which you referred!

Well, that wasn't really me. I found the instructions to disable Dropbox's behavior of sending screen shots to the clipboard while trying to figure out what was going on. Even then, it took me a few minutes to figure out they were talking about a separate app, not the Drop Box folder in the user account.

Looks like you've got it fixed now. 🙂

You are too modest, Kurt! 😉 I really do appreciate you going that extra mile!

Now then, about the 'blue' links in the emails from Apple not working ............

Here's the link which does not 'work' - how best to tackle sorting this out? A completely new thread in the Apple Discussions?

Advice please!

That doesn't really tell us anything. I can see there's a clickable link in the email, but there's no way to determine from that why clicking on the link doesn't jump you to your web browser and load the page.

Just to see if it yet again has to do with Dropbox, login to the test account and try clicking an email link from there. If it works, I would suspect Dropbox again and delete the app entirely.

Hi Kurt 🙂

I have thought about reinstalling Yosemite.

I do have back-ups on my external hard drive - which is used in conjunction with TimeMachine. Just for fun, I HAVE previously disconnected my external drive, started my iMac with an installation CD (Leopard/Snow Leopard) and then used Disk Utility to erase my internal hard drive. I've then simply reinstalled all the data from my external hard drive - just to make sure it really WOULD work if I needed to do this exercise in anger, so to speak. Such action does, of course, put back any 'errors' which were previously resident on my machine!

Do you have a preferred method of carrying out a clean reinstall? Perhaps you can point me in the right direction!

If I do do that, will I then be able to transfer selected data currently stored on my external drive (saved using Time Machine) back onto my iMac again? Are you aware of how best to do this if it IS possible?

So many questions!!! 😉

As long as you know for certain you have a backup you can restore, you could try this.

To avoid installing the Mac's original OS and then working your way back to Yosemite (which then isn't really a clean install since you'd be installing one OS over another), get Yosemite on a flash drive.

Open the App Store and click on the Purchases icon. Click on the Download button for Yosemite. The App Store will tell you Yosemite is already installed. Click Continue to download it anyway. When the download is complete, it will automatically launch to start the install process. Press Command+Q to quit. The installer should remain in the Applications folder (it sometimes self deletes when you quit, even though it isn't supposed to). If that happens, you get to download it again. 🙂

Purchase an 8GB flash drive. There are manual ways to create a bootable full installer from the OS X installation package you downloaded, but the easy way is the automated DiskMaker X. You don't even need to format the drive for the Mac ahead of time. Just plug in the flash drive and launch DiskMaker X. It will search the drive for an OS X installer and should easily locate the Yosemite download. It will then do everything. It will format the flash drive, and create a fully bootable install to the flash drive from the installer in the Applications folder. When it's done, restart and hold down the Option key.

When the Startup Manager appears, you can let go of the Option key. Choose the flash drive and continue. The Mac will boot to the flash drive and the screen that appears will look just like Recovery Mode. Wipe the hard drive with Disk Utility and then install OS X.

There's no doubt things will work as they're supposed to at this point. However, merging your Time Machine backup into the freshly installed OS may reintroduce the same problems. So be prepared for that possible unpleasantness.
