White screen with a crossed out circle which flickers to the Apple logo sometimes, but won't open. What can I do to open it?

Help!! I'm in Belize (not a good place to be with an Apple, as international as you may claim to be!) and my computer decided to "quit" thusly:

White screen with a crossed out circle which flickers to the Apple logo sometimes, but won't open. What can I do to open it? (I do have my recently backed up data with me, but no loading discs for my computer.

Hoping there is a solution,

Reboot & try again.

The globe indicates the Mac is getting recovery mode via the internet - it is trying to download the basic system to boot from. It must have failed.

Is your internet OK? Is it restricted or does it have a maximum download limit?

Once that downloads it will present you with the options again where you can choose install. Then it will download the installer.

It's a lot to download, but its the only way I'm afraid.

Keep trying, if you have access to a ethernet cable use that - it is more stable & faster than wifi.

brought it to proper internet connection and strength, went through downloading of all the reinstall OS X. No good. conclusion - hard drive must have a problem. back to original screen: flashing apple or circle with line through it or globe.

REALLY disappointing!

That's that.Rrepair out of the question here - no Apple store and did not want seal broken as "extended warranty" good through Dec'15.

Want now? I have 3 months with no computer! All because it is an Apple MacBook Pro. What will the GLOBAL "AppleCare Protection Plan" do for me?????

Something I hope!

It's good to hear from you, but I'm sorry it isn't on better terms.

I'm afraid I don't know what the global Apple repair program covers. Every time it is mentioned on these forums a more knowledgeable user responds pointing out that repairs need to be done in the country of original purchase. It's unclear to me how it is meant to work.

Create a new topic here asking about that if you want some confirmation. I suspect you may need to ship it back to the US for Applecare to look at it but that is just my guess. If it is covered by Applecare there may be some help to arrange the shipping.

If you want to retry here is what those startup images mean…

The circle a line through it = 'No bootable Operating System was found.'

That means you didn't hold down cmd+alt+r long enough to boot into internet recovery mode you may want to find some heavy objects to depress the keys, it can be very tedious. If you see that you need to reboot & start over.

The globe = downloading Internet recovery to boot from - this can take many minutes.

If you have the option use an ethernet connection (wired network) - it is many times faster & is more stable than wifi. It sounds like the Mac is dropping it's connection & unable to complete the download.

I don't know what to suggest beyond keep trying, sorry I can see it is very frustrating.

which makes this whole discussion totally useless, and a waste of time, if not in one of the Apple (NO) Care countries. Spending 40 minutes (just did) long distance fees, as no reverse charge calls to Apple, and no phone back to Belize from (ROTTEN) Apple.

What would be helpful to me, would be having somewhere that I could nicely send (therefore not this) a request for help in Belize where I am for the next three months.

sorry, don't take this personally!

harknbehold, I am reposting my last comment - the moderators have deleted it for the wrong reasons –

Moderator there is NO REFERENCE TO JAILBRAKING OR iOS IN MY POST - (read it for yourself before you delete, or at least give a valid reason for removal)… moderator you should also be aware that Mac OS can be installed on ANY Mac that is 'controlled' by the person with the Apple ID, so in this case that would be harknbehold who authorises the 'Apple guy' to install - not an SLA violation. Try helping moderator.

I don't take it personally - I'm not employed by Apple.

There is an excellent computer guy here who could fix it with Apple's cooperation!

He may be able to help without Apple intervention, for example…

He could make a USB bootable installer of the OS for installing onto your Mac.

http://diskmakerx.com

That should be better than trying to rely on the internet for booting (I'm not sure how reliable the internet is in Belize).

Ideally you would obtain the OS installer under your Apple ID by signing in on any Mac that can access the Apple store. It will cause conflicts if that Mac has any Apps from another Apple ID, but he can remove them to allow you to sign in & get the OS that is in your Apple ID.

Once you have the USB stick he can remove the installer & reinstall the apps from the other Apple ID (he could store them on another disk).

If you can't do that he could use his own ID if he has the correct Mac OS in his Apple account - it could get the Mac into a booting state, which then should allow you to sign in & get the OS under your Apple ID.

Yes it seems insanely complex & convoluted, but the alternative is dealing with Apple & their 'lack of support' in Belize.

There may be other options too, especially if the 'Apple guy' has access to other Macs that have similar spec.

If your Apple guy needs advice, ask him to sign up & post here. I'm willing to try to explain here if he doesn't understand.
