kernel_task panics under Yosemite

I've been running Yosemite on my pretty vanilla Mini with no issues. Recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite, and it's unstable. Frequent, unpredictable kernel panics. I have removed most of my potentially-suspicious startup items (Boingo, TeamViewer), but still experience occasional, random restarts. Any insights would be deeply appreciated.

Here's a recent and representative panic report (also happened earlier today, with similar panic report):

You can't, of course, replace the memory in that model.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Grrr. Thanks, Linc (and Kappy) for the insights. Have to admit that I'm still struck by the coincidence that these failures only started after upgrading to 10.10 - machine was rock-solid before that.

Before I entrust my baby to Apple, just curious about your thoughts regarding (1) what I should communicate to them and (2) what I should expect them to (be able to) do in response. Should I collect several of the panic reports, or print out this one, or ??? On the response front, are they likely to send out the machine for a hardware repair or just throw up their arms? The machine is several years old and out of any warranty. I presume I'll have an opportunity to understand the potential costs involved in the repair?

Thanks for your help.

Okay, here is an update. Sorry it's taken some time to report, but we've had houseguests and, as you'll see, I've encountered some bumps along the way.

Short story: I've not yet been to the Genius Bar (GB).

Long story: While preparing for my GB appt I ran Disk Utility, which reported that my disk was too fouled up for it to deal with. So, I purchased DiskWarrior and, after doing a full backup of my disk, successfully (1) cleaned up my directories, and (2) repaired my disk permissions. Now Apple's Disk Utility runs and reports no errors (completes with a 0 result code). I've run Apple Hardware Test (extended; this is the appropriate tool for my vintage of machine) - "no trouble found". In the midst of this I did upgrade to 10.10.2 (sorry - changed more than one variable in the problem space). I continue to get the (same) kernel panics when running in normal boot mode. When I run in Safe mode, I do not get the panics (at least not within 24 hours of boot; normally I would see a panic within that timeframe). I do, however, get system hangs: mouse tracks but the system is otherwise completely non-responsive - can't drop any menus; system doesn't respond to force-quit key sequence; I'm forced to hard-reset and reboot the machine. Best I can tell this happens about 1-1/2 days after boot. Looking at the system logs I see the following message sequence filling the console log:

1/29/15 12:17:06.627 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.watchdogd) Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds.

1/29/15 12:17:16.639 PM watchdogd[10125]: [watchdog_daemon] @( wd_watchdog_open) - IOIteratorNext failed (kr=0)

1/29/15 12:17:16.640 PM watchdogd[10125]: [watchdog_daemon] @( wd_daemon_init) - could not initialize the hardware watchdog

1/29/15 12:17:16.640 PM watchdogd[10125]: [watchdog_daemon] @( main) - cannot initialize the watchdog service

Looking at the logs right now I see that that message is in there during this (safe) boot cycle, every 10 seconds. So, maybe a red herring as regards the hang?

So....given that the panics don't occur in Safe mode, have persisted after 10.10.2 upgrade, and Hardware Test is not turning up any hardware issues, I'm thinking that it may be worth my time to play with adding extensions under Safe mode until I see the panic, rather than going to GB right now.

Thoughts / suggestions?

Thanks!!!!

Doug

Update post Genius Bar.

They kept the machine for a couple of days and were not able to reproduce the panic while running under a " known good" installation of Yosemite. Their hardware testing turned up nothing. Their recommendation: reformat the entire SSD (MacOS and Windows partitions) and re-install a clean version of Yosemite. I balked, because I can't see why we would wipe the Windows partition (I'm running bootcamp, rather than any virtualized configuration) - that would materially increase my recovery time.

Since then I have re-installed Yosemite from my recovery disk (without reformatting the partition first). The machine ran fine for several days, so I was feeling pretty good. Earlier today, though, I got another kernel panic, same basic parameters as above.

So...questions to the smart folks here:

* Do you agree that a clean install is the next step?

* Assuming "yes" to that questions, how do you recommend I go about doing a clean re-install of Yosemite? (Shouldn't I just be able to use Disk Utility to re-format the MacOS partition and re-install, followed by recovering my data from backup(s)?)

Feb 16, 2015 2:59 PM in response to drengfer

I know you all are on pins and needles, so here's another update.

I remain skeptical of the need for a clean install, or at least I'm reluctant to do so without a clear diagnosis. So, I continue to work the problem. Ran the machine in Safe Mode for several days with no issues.

Now running in Normal Mode without loading any login items. As you've seen from the dumps, this is a relatively vanilla machine, but trying to be cautious and thorough. Keeping an eye on memory use in Activity Monitor, I see that Image Capture Extension (ICE) occasionally runs amok and chews up GB of memory. I have also stopped using Firefox (35.x.x), since it seems to be a bit of a memory hog. So....while I'm slowly going through the process of re-adding my login items (so far I've re-added Skype and Dropbox; still to come: google drive, firefox, and filestring), I'm also keeping a close eye on ICE. So far, I've seen it go bonkers once. Killed it and it re-started itself and then behaved.

I've been able to run for many days at a time without any panics, so, while it's difficult to prove a negative, my working hypothesis right now is that ICE (perhaps in league with Firefox or FileString?) is the culprit. I have yet to find the 'trigger' that causes ICE to run amok; I'm hoping it's Firefox related.

I'll keep y'all posted.

If it's any consolation, it is no longer a one-off experience. I had my system panic at the same spot tonight (a Mid-2011 Air on 10.10.2). I was not using my machine at the time. I left my bedroom with the screensaver on and came back to a rebooted machine.

I'd seen that thread, but doesn't appear to apply to my situation. Image Capture Extension (ICE) remains a consistent culprit - seems to run amok, chewing up memory until the machine dies. Unfortunately, I've yet to find the root cause. Today I downloaded a fresh combo installer of 10.10.2 and installed it. Running in normal mode after that install while watching memory use. Will report back...

Been having the same issue with kernel panics related to vm_object_compressor_pager_create since installing Yosemite on my MBPro (late 2011). Just had a look, and Image Capture Extension is using 2.15GB of memory, though only 13.9MB of real memory. Because the real memory figure is low, I'm not convinced that the (presumed) memory leak in ICE is causing the problem - it's annoying & should be fixed, but it's not chewing up all my real memory (16GB).

Done some more digging - found the open source version of the vm_object.c library. While it doesn't have the exact error message we're getting, if has some similar ones. I believe what is happening is that a call is being made to vm_object.c to create a virtual memory object that is larger than vm_object.c allows. The size requested is massive - hex fffffffffffff000 is something like 18.4 yottabytes (18.4 million terabytes), so it's clearly an error. The kernel should be doing some sanity checking on VM requests and rejecting them rather than attempting the impossible - it appears it doesn't, for some reason.
