imessage and Facetime sign in activation error iPad ios8.1.2

I notice another user has posted today 21st Jan 2015, the same problem I have had for a couple of days.

I have an iPad Air, an iPhone 5S and an iMac. Using my iPad on Saturday 18th suddenly couldn't see my imessages or use Facetime (I'd used FT half an hour before it all went); kept on getting Activation error on both Apps. BUT ONLY ON MY IPAD AIR?!

My iPhone and iMac work absolutely fine and I can continue to use both with imessage and Facetime. I have so far done the following, as advised by Apple Support and my local Apple Genius Bar appointment today:

  • Hard reset. Used home button and off button to reset. Didn't work
  • Reset Network settings. Didn't work
  • Reset All settings. Didn't work
  • Backed up and Restored iPad. Tried to log in to iMessage and Facetime from as new setup before restoring backup. Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "deep restore". Didn't work
  • Apple Genius bar performed a "set up as brand new iPad" process. Didn't work
  • Logged out of Apple ID on iPhone then tried logging in to same Apple ID on iPad. Didn't work
  • Apple confirmed my Apple ID is correctly verified on their system.

Apple have now escalated my issue to their Engineering Team, so I hope they can fix, but the Apple guy in the store said he'd never come across this problem before.

I have been told IT IS NOT a hardware issue, it has to a a software issue, but it sounds more like me that it's an Apple verification issue on their servers?

If anyone has come across this, or can provide any other ideas I'd be most grateful. I still have use of imessage and Factime on my iPhone and iMac, so its more frustration that I have an expensive iPad Air that is missing paid-for functionality that I expect Apple to address and nothing more.

Thanks in advance 🙂

I have exactly the same problem with my iPad4. iMessage stopped working 2 days ago, so I upgraded to iOS 8.1.2 in the hope that this would solve the problem. Since doing that, I get the "error occurred during activation" message every time I try to sign in to either iMessage or FaceTime. I have tried all the usual solutions with no success. I have tried it on a different network, but the error message remains the same. The problem seems to be affecting a number of users, so hopefully Apple will find a solution.

Hi

I'm not going to be very helpful on this. I've tried just about everything I can think of:

reboots

resets

reboot routers, modems etc

different networks at home

networks about 1000 miles apart

4G networks

Only thing I haven't done is try it in the USA where network delays will be less than here in Australia.

Nothing solves the problem.

As noted elsewhere a couple of time it appears to have activated but drops out almost instantaneously.

It seems like most operating systems maturity=complexity and more prone to failure.

So talked to Apple support today and got transferred to a senior tech pretty quick since the normal support couldn't help me, so even the senior tech had no idea what was going on, he did a diagnostic on my Ipad Air and told me he will contact the apple engineers monday morning he will also give me a call back Monday or tuesday to tell me what is going on, so until then I guess we all have to wait.

By the way for me it seems to only appear on my Ipad Air, everything works fine on my Iphone 5, Imac desktop and my kids two Ipad minis.

I also have a replacement iPad Air (November 2014) and FaceTime and iMessage stop working just few hours ago. I was using it all morning and it was working great. What is strange that the "Activation" error did not happen on the same day for everyone who is experiencing this problem and it did not happen to all iPad Apple users, but randomly for some, including me. Apps working fine on other Apple devices. Very strange!

I just heard back from my tech he said:

I’ve received a response from our engineering team that they have received some other reports on this issue and it is currently being investigated.

They wanted me to assure you that it is not a hardware issue and to be sure to keep your device up to date. At this point, I’m not sure if there will be further direct response to me on this or if it will be addressed with an iOS update. If I get more direct response on this, I will be sure to pass on the information to you.

ok guys I am not an expert but if you guys still experience issues than try a reset one more time the easiest is maybe to go to general settings and than choose reset all settings you will only loose password for wifi and a couple setups like display brightness keyboard setup nothing really important. Maybe that helps I also restored my ipad twice and set it up as new not sure if that helped to solve the issue. Keep trying maybe it takes longer for some and less for other. Maybe location makes difference too. If I hear something from the senior tech I will pass it to you guys ASAP.
