Apple TV 3 can't connect to shared iTunes library

My Apple TV 3 says it can't connect to my iTunes library, which is stored on my 2014 MacBook Pro. I've had this working without fault until I bought an Airport Extreme.

Here's what I've checked:

  • Devices are all connected to the network via Wi-Fi (guest network isn't enabled, nor is separate 5 GHz network). I've tried re-starting the router.
  • Sharing is turned on in iTunes preferences. I've tried turning it off and back on again.
  • Checked firewall settings on the MacBook, and tried turning it off.
  • The Apple TV is connecting to the internet, and can access iTunes, Netflix, etc.
  • AirPlay from the MacBook works fine.
  • OS and software is up-to-date on all devices.
  • Tried accessing the library from my iPhone 6. This doesn't work either.

I'm thinking it's an issue with the Airport Extreme since that's the only thing that's changed recently. It's in DHCP and NAT mode, connected to my ISP-provided modem/router set to modem-only mode.

Any ideas?

This problem has been really frustrating for me since the last ATV updates.

I have 3 ATV3s and 2 ATV2s. The ATV2s have been pretty stable, but the ATV3s would not connect to my iTunes library on my MacPro running latest release of Yosemite and iTunes. All ATVs are running the latest version available to it.

Any time my ATV3 would go to sleep it would lose the connection to the library and the only way I could get it back was to restart the ATV3. That worked 75% of the time, but sometimes I would have to close then open the iTunesapp, or even reboot the computer.

Over the weekend I tried a bunch of changes to the MAC, changed computer name, library name, etc., and started running the iTunes library from an account with administrator priveleges.

Since I made this change late Saturday, I have not had any library disconnects, and the environment has stabilized again.

total pain; have to reboot everytime I want to listen to airplay downstairs on my audio system

amazing apple engineers aren't even aware of this issue

dealt w/ 6 senior advisers and had to bring this issue and forum to their attention to pass it up the chain of command!

how frustrating! surprised more people aren't complaining...

and that itunes match ***** that you are limited to 25,000 songs; how stupid for those of us that are audiophiles1

I have rebuilt the iTunes library and that did not help, so I wouldn't go through that if I were you.

But I am going to do a clean install of the OS next. I am doubtful it will help, but have to go through this methodically and will post the results.

I have also tinkered with opening variety of ports on the U Verse router on the APV and my iMac, with no progress.

I am re-installing Yosemite as we speak. A clean install, not an upgrade. So, I will know within hours, perhaps by morning if that will resolve the issue. However, right before doing that. I tested my two Macs, one iMac and one MBP to see if it connects to either of my ATV3's. The iMac which has the latest iTunes 12.1.0.50 on it gave the same error that it can not access iTunes. However, the MacBook Pro which the iTunes has not been updated to the latest version connected repeatedly with no problem.

So, I think the latest iTunes is the main culprit, however it may not be the only one. ATV3 model along with the new iTunes 12.1.0.50 is the problem, and until they release either a patch/update for ATV, or iTunes with this bug fixed, there are no sure shot workarounds. That is if they address the problem in their next update release.

I didn't stop there, I bought and replaced my Airport Extreme

AirPort Extreme 802.11n (4th Gen)

With the new

AirPort Extreme 802.11AC (5th Gen)

So far, no difference other than the obvious which the new Airport is much more faster technology of 802.11AC, instead of 802.11N. I still have to deal with the Arris NVG589 from AT&T U-Verse (Not Time Warner)and convert it to a bridge and make the Airport the primary WiFi DHCP router, since they are still in bridge mode.

So, so far all attempts have failed, but have narrowed the problem greatly. Sorry, I wish I had better news to report.

I performed a clean install of Yosemite OS on my MBP and have had no problem with the ATV connecting to it. It is hard to tell what actually the problem is, but obviously the build up of OS upgrades on top of each other has something significant to do with it.

Just follow the standard instructions for a clean Install, after you have backed up all you data via Time Machine or otherwise, and it should correct the problem.

Good luck
