Apple TV 3 can't connect to shared iTunes library

My Apple TV 3 says it can't connect to my iTunes library, which is stored on my 2014 MacBook Pro. I've had this working without fault until I bought an Airport Extreme.

Here's what I've checked:

  • Devices are all connected to the network via Wi-Fi (guest network isn't enabled, nor is separate 5 GHz network). I've tried re-starting the router.
  • Sharing is turned on in iTunes preferences. I've tried turning it off and back on again.
  • Checked firewall settings on the MacBook, and tried turning it off.
  • The Apple TV is connecting to the internet, and can access iTunes, Netflix, etc.
  • AirPlay from the MacBook works fine.
  • OS and software is up-to-date on all devices.
  • Tried accessing the library from my iPhone 6. This doesn't work either.

I'm thinking it's an issue with the Airport Extreme since that's the only thing that's changed recently. It's in DHCP and NAT mode, connected to my ISP-provided modem/router set to modem-only mode.

Any ideas?

I received an email yesterday from Netgear about a new router update for my R7000. In the release notes it mentioned that it fixes the compatibility problem with iTunes 12.1.

I immediately applied the update (36 hours ago) and I have been able to connect to my iTunes library every time that I have tried and from every Apple TV. Prior to the update I could not go more than an hour of idle time before I had to restart the Apple TV to reconnect to my Library.

I wonder how many other routers have a similar problem?

My ATV cannot find my iTunes library on Windows 7 professional 64 bit (other than occasional random events where it works). Have rebooted/reinstalled/checked firewalls/updated all software and so forth. I can play apps, Netflix, etc. just fine from the ATV, and can use Airplay from iPad's to play any content, and i can see ATV when logged into the router on the windows pc. I've tried the multitude of fixes on apple support.

Here's the interesting part: I logged onto the Guest account on my computer and clicked on the iTunes icon to see what would happen. Viola, i could see the ATV icon and select it to play music. i then closed the program, switched back to my usual account, and No Joy.....can't see ATV and the ATV cannot find that library. I have a lot of music on this computer, but only 4000 songs actually in iTunes.

Any thoughts on what might be interfering with my user account and preventing access between ATV and iTunes in home sharing (my account has full privledges, while Guest account is not an Administrator).
