Slow WiFi issues after 10.10.2

I seem to have much much slower WiFi connectivity after the 10.10.2 update on my 2014 MBP 2.8?

It was a bit unreliable before, as it used to drop out quite often, but I was getting 35-40 Mbps average on WiFi,even though I use it in CLAMSHELL mode mostly.(Whilst using Ethernet via Thunderbolt I'd get 95 Mbps to give you some idea of what is possible)

But NOW it's almost unusable, it just lags as if it's connected to a 1 Mbps service...

In fact I've just tested it and it's worse that that!

How on earth have Apple made this happen?

Anyone else have the same issues?

Cheers

Hi Dillonphoto,

I had the exact same problem.

Wifi in 10.10.1 was not perfect but it worked.

After the 10.10.2 update it became painfully bad. Dropped packets, pings floating from 100 to 1000's and timeouts, no internet for large amount of times, etc.

I contacted apple support and they said they had no reports of a bug in the last update, and after running numerous tests they suggested I dropped by an apple repair certificated facility to run more tests.

As it turns out, this is a bug with the latest wireless drivers. They may have fixed the WiFI for other but they ruined it for me.

I resolved the issue (temporarily of course) by reverting the wireless driver to the one before the update.

I just hope apple notices the bug and fixes it.

This post sorted the problem. Amazing. This has been plaguing me for months.

For example, (I'm on a fibre optic internet connection) using www.speedtest.net my download rate was 4-6mbs, and after installing this extension, repairing permissions and rebooting. Doing the same test gives me 39mbs!!

Why Apple is letting thousands of people suffer with slow wifi and not patch this problem is beyond negligent.

This advice from Lysin was also helpful to me. After having wifi issues after 10.10.2, reverting to IO80211Family.kext version 7.0 helped greatly.

For each subsequent update to Yosemite, I have hoped it would be fixed - but no, I have to restore the kext again.

This weekend, I tried the El Capitan beta - it has a new version of IO80211Family.kext (version 11.0), but it still has the same problems.

Note - I find the issues are mostly with network being very slow after waking from sleep. Both slow to make a connection, and once a connection is made very slow transfer rates. System is Macbook Pro Retina mid-2014. I have tested with clean installs of both Yosemite and El Capitan. Have tried various other suggested fixes, but it seems the 7.0 version of the driver is the only one that works properly with this system.

Can anyone confirm that this is a know issue ? Lysin indicated he had communicated with Apple, and was waiting for a fix - has anything come of this ? It's a concern that the problem still exists in the upcoming release.

I have an MBP (Retina, 15", early 2013), now with 10.10.4, and I still experience this issue (slow wifi after waking from sleep - wifi speed is fine after full shutdown / re-start). I installed the 7.0 IO80211Family.kext, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Prior to 10.10.4, I did the manual switch from discoveryd back to mDNSResponder, and that seemed to help a little. I also have turned off bluetooth. Prior to the kext downgrade, I had turned off ipv6, but I now notice that it is back on. I'll try that as a final attempt. Edit: This didn't appear to help.

All this being said, my system is usable but I'm only getting ~15Mbps instead of normal 30Mbps.

Hi guys,

I had the slow internet issue for the past few weeks, not only on WiFi but also on Thunderbolt Ethernet. I tried all the solutions suggested here to no avail. Then one day I found under Network -> Advanced -> WINS my NetBIOS Name is MACBOOK-PRO which is the default value. I changed the name to something else and voila ~ the internet speed is fast as **** again (100Mbps compared to only 2Mbps for the past week). My guess is that there are other devices with the same NetBIOS Name with my rMBP - MACBOOK-PRO since it's the default name from factory settings, causing some sorts of confusion to the main internet host hence the slow internet speed (I live in my college's hostel and share network with others).

This may be applicable to those using company's network too. In short, if you share the network with other people or there are multiple MBP, MBA connecting to your network, try renaming each of their NetBIOS Name (Network -> Advanced -> WINS).

Hope this helps!

I dealt with this for a while... dumping prefs, deleting wifi service, deleting keychains, etc. it was awful

disabling IPv6 did the trick, and the wifi speed returned instantly.

you have to use terminal and enter the following: networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi

Check this article for reference (there are many others). It will also give you the command to restore IPv6.
