Unable To Install iTunes on Windows 7

I had iTunes on this computer right up until an hour ago when I was told there was an update available for it. I tried to update it, the update failed. In the process it corrupted the iTunes program that was already there and working just fine. So I used the ADD/REMOVE Programs function on Windows to remove iTunes and then went to the Apple site and downloaded the installer for iTunes. Upon running the installer I get the usual "Open File - Security Warning" asking if I am sure I want to run the file. I click run. The status bar comes up as the installer opens.

The "Welcome to iTunes" window comes up and displays the version to be installed as 12.1.0.71 x64. I click next.

The installation options screen comes up, add shortcut to desktop and use iTunes as default player, English and destination folder. I uncheck the default player option and click install.

I get the permission to make changes to the hard drive question.

Installer runs.

Then a message pops up:

"An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT.type="win32".version="8.0.50727.6195".publicKeyToken="1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b".processorArchitecture="AMD64"". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. "HRESULT: 0x80070091"

I click OK. The installer says, "rolling back action" and tries again. And supposedly makes it further this time around. It's status says "starting services" and my computer makes the sound like hardware has been connected and my phone chirps that it's connected to the PC. But the installer is frozen at this point.

I then get an error that states:

"Service 'Apple Mobile Device Service' (Apple Mobile Device Service) failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services. Abort Retry Ignore.

Clicking RETRY does not resolve the issue. Clicking IGNORE does not allow the program to proceed. Clicking ABORT rolls back the installation completely and closes the program.

I have gone to Services.msc and found the service in question and told it to start. And am given the following message:

Windows could not start the Apple Mobile Device Service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Interestingly enough, there are TWO services with this name. One is started, the other is not.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

I have done all of that countless times. Have spent 6 hours on this piece of crap update. I get the error "failure to start mobile services" as stated up above earlier, during installation. Push re-entry to no avail. Uninstalled everything many times and tried again and again and again and again. Same problem every time. Im done for today, I've had it. Regardless of the fix...we should not have to do ANYTHING for a update period other than press update now. This is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to manually delete the Apple Mobile Device Service. Will need to use the command prompt, run as administrator. Then enter:

sc delete "Apple Mobile Device Service" including the quotes. If you don't use the quotes the command prompt won't recognize the file name with spaces.

In my case I had to delete two of them, the second one was just called "Apple Mobile Device"

I have every sympathy for your position, it shouldn't be so difficult. That said, once things have gone wrong fixing them is never as easy as it should be. I've had several failed installs of different software over the years that have eventually required rebuilding Windows to resolve.

I take it the iTunes application and related components (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support & Bonjour) appear to install successfully, only to fail at launch time? Have you tried right-clicking the iTunes icon in the Start Menu and using Run as Administrator? Can you start AMDS from the services.msc control panel?

Hey TT2, is there any way someone at Apple (who could actually do something about this problem) could be notified that itunes6464install.exe for 12.1 is badly broken, at least for certain users such as myself running Win7 with the latest Microsoft patches?

I knew I was in big trouble when I ran itunes6464install.exe the first time, with a completely viable and perfectly working iTunes installation, when it came up and told me it lacked privilege to start a service (abort, retry, ignore), when I was logged in as an admin userid.

It was all downhill from there. But thanks to Tim Lento, I'm back up and running having installed itunes64install.exe, supposedly for older video cards.

I have never in the approximately 15 years I've had ipods had this much trouble with an iTunes update.

I will never install another iTunes update after this until it has been out at least a month.

I was having this problem as well. I completely uninstalled the program and all of its components per the guide provided above then reinstalled the msi's one by one. I was consistently failing on the AppleApplicationSupport64.msi and I couldn't find a work around. After a few long, frustrating hours, I removed it all again and installed the 64/32 version on a whim and it worked on the first try. So far I haven't found any portions of the program that are running unexpectedly so I'll probably just leave it with this version until another 64/64 release comes out and I'll try that one again. I almost resorted going back to version 11.4, another provided suggestion, but thankfully didn't reach that point. Good luck to anyone still dealing with this mess.

The problem I have is "iTunes has stopped working". This occurs "randomly" after installing iTunes 12. Everything seems to install fine but when I run iTunes then it will randomly stop working and different places in the program (various DLLs are reported in the detailed panel).

I installed the "64-64" version of iTunes 12.1.0.71 and it resulted in 2 entries for Apple Application Support:

Apple Application Support (32-bit), and

Apple Application Support (64-bit)

Here is my question: Is it normal to have both of these entries in the Programs list?

This is Windows 7 on a 64 bit laptop. Before installing iTunes 12, I performed the complete removal procedures described in your posting: Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

Thank you.

I initially installed the itunes6464setup.exe version of iTunes 12.1.0.71 but I got the video playback warning so switched to itunes64setup.exe which is the 64-bit installer for the 32-bit code. Looking inside the 6464 setup file there are two AAS files so I suspect that both versions of the component are supposed to be installed. Apple Software Update for example is still 32-bit code. I would try installing itunes64setup.exe using the links in the further information area of the user tip.

Thank you for the reply. I just installed the itunes64setup (64 bit installer, 32 bit iTunes) as you suggested and now iTunes appears to be stable; no "iTunes has stopped working" so far! Again, the only symptoms on my computer were "iTunes has stopped working"; I did not get any warnings about video playback or any other indications of video-related problems.

Thank you for maintaining a thorough and well-written user tip; it has clearly been a big help to many people.
