Unable To Install iTunes on Windows 7

I had iTunes on this computer right up until an hour ago when I was told there was an update available for it. I tried to update it, the update failed. In the process it corrupted the iTunes program that was already there and working just fine. So I used the ADD/REMOVE Programs function on Windows to remove iTunes and then went to the Apple site and downloaded the installer for iTunes. Upon running the installer I get the usual "Open File - Security Warning" asking if I am sure I want to run the file. I click run. The status bar comes up as the installer opens.

The "Welcome to iTunes" window comes up and displays the version to be installed as 12.1.0.71 x64. I click next.

The installation options screen comes up, add shortcut to desktop and use iTunes as default player, English and destination folder. I uncheck the default player option and click install.

I get the permission to make changes to the hard drive question.

Installer runs.

Then a message pops up:

"An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT.type="win32".version="8.0.50727.6195".publicKeyToken="1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b".processorArchitecture="AMD64"". Please refer to Help and Support for more information. "HRESULT: 0x80070091"

I click OK. The installer says, "rolling back action" and tries again. And supposedly makes it further this time around. It's status says "starting services" and my computer makes the sound like hardware has been connected and my phone chirps that it's connected to the PC. But the installer is frozen at this point.

I then get an error that states:

"Service 'Apple Mobile Device Service' (Apple Mobile Device Service) failed to start. Verify you have sufficient privileges to start system services. Abort Retry Ignore.

Clicking RETRY does not resolve the issue. Clicking IGNORE does not allow the program to proceed. Clicking ABORT rolls back the installation completely and closes the program.

I have gone to Services.msc and found the service in question and told it to start. And am given the following message:

Windows could not start the Apple Mobile Device Service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Interestingly enough, there are TWO services with this name. One is started, the other is not.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

Bear with me and please be gentle, this is my first forum/support post and certainly not a tech guru but I'm now 8+ hours into trying to figure out a solution to this nightmare of a problem and after attempting EVERY solution mentioned in this thread aswell as others, I'm now completely and utterly at my wits end and desperate for help.

I have successfully (I think) managed to uninstall iTunes, all related bits and pieces as mentioned in the install/reinstall troubleshooting steps, have rebooted so many times I've lost count, am not actually getting any error messages at all, have disabled my Firewall completely, not running any antivirus that I can see, am running an administrator profile, and yet I still have not managed to install iTunes of any description back onto my Windows 7 x64 laptop yet. I think I'm almost at the point of being on the verge of tears due to sheer frustration. Whenever I click on 'Download' to install iTunes 12.1.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards), or any similar version for that matter, it does simply nothing. If I try to open/run the 'iTunes64Setup.exe' file, again nothing happens, just sits at the bottom of my screen kind of flashing at me but not responding. Nothing seems to be responding at all to allow me to download, open, run or save any file or program associated with this problem whatsoever.

Can anyone at all please, please, please save me from insanity and shed any more light on what may be the issue here or if there is any available and accessible support from Apple or Microsoft about this issue as yet? I've been searching all day and now I'm about to give up and be left with no iTunes at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks 😕🙂

Try this: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.ht ml

The System File Checker may some damaged system files that need repairing that could be the root cause of the current issue.

Or try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/tweaking_com_repair_msi_(windows_install er).html

In case the issues is a damaged MSI installer.

You could also try the techniques in the sectionInstall missing components which has advice on breaking down the iTunes installer into the individual .msi files which might prove useful if iTunes won't install normally.

Hi turingtest2,

Thank you so much for your prompt and helpful reply, I really appreciate it. I've had a look through your suggestions and will certainly try to brave through attempting them. Hopefully I can't do any more damage than what has already taken place by this disastrous attempt at a simple and routine iTunes and iPhone back up earlier today, I'm a bit scared though I admit, wish me luck! ...... 😕

I have had this problem and solved it. Here is what i had to do.

1. I downloaded the Itunes 12 installer and reinstalled Itunes 12.

2. Open Itunes and login to account and deauthorize the computer

3. Log off the account

4. Close Itunes

5. Double the Itunes 12 installer app. You will see a box to check to remove Itunes from your computer

6. After removing Itunes, go to Control Panel and remove all other Apple published software and drivers (ie, Quicktime,Bonjour, etc)

7. Go to Search on the start menu, and type in *.*itl. This will highlight your Itunes Library files. Right click the highlight and delete all libraries.

8. Now you may install an earlier version of Itunes for Windows by double clicking the installer files.

I appreciate the alternative approach. I first installed Itunes 11 with the playlist intact but the program would not open with them. I got a message that the playlists were created with a later version. When I deleted the itl files. Itunes 11 opened. I of course have some backups of the Itl files (slightly outdated) and now I plan on reinstalling the library. I'll take a look at your method hopefully, it won't take too much time I only have about 1200 albums or so.😁 As a footnote, when installing Itunes 11, people should be sure to not allow the new installation to automatically download updates. There is a box for this when the installer starts. Thanks for you info.

I had itunes 11.0 on my machine(Windows 7 64bit OS) and was upgrading to the latest 12. the installation process would stall when "starting services". I deleted everything apple related, tried multiple versions of 11 and 12 64 bit but nothing worked. I tried the Itunes for old video cards and it installed with no issues. What i dont get is, my video card is not what i would consider old(Radeon R9 280x). Anyway I think it ***** that we all have to go through such a mission to get itunes installed. i spent hours and hours troubleshooting this. Special thanks to the person who advised us to try the itunes for old video cards!

The "for older video cards" label is somewhat misleading. Although this version does provide compatibility with older video hardware, it is (like all "64 bit" versions of iTunes prior to 12.1) actually the 32-bit application with a 64-bit installer. That this version also addresses other issues suggests that Apple haven't yet resolved all possible compatibility issues with 64-bit editions of Windows - there's also some evidence that the "full" 64-bit installer may not always remove all components of a previous 32-bit installation, resulting in conflicting 32- and 64-bit versions of some drivers/services that successful operation depends on. The other scenario where the "for older video cards" may be appropriate is where integration with third-party applications fails, several of these being where the supplier of the third-party application has not yet produced an update that can interoperate with a full 64-bit version of iTunes.
