PowerMac G5 not displaying anything!

i have a 1.6 ghz single core and single processor model. when i turn it on it starts up. fans kick in. i HEAR THE CHIME. and the hdd starts to make its normal noise.

nothing is flashing. everything is how it should be. except the fact that my 23" apple hd cinema display the plastic one, does not show anything. it still gets enough power to run the backlight of the buttons. the keyboard and mouse are plugged in to the monitor. i can still eject the cd drive via the keyboard. but the mouse' laser doesn't appear to be showing anything. hellp me bdaquaxd

i took the broken one out. placed the other one in its place. everything boots up. just the apple logo is showing and the spinning wheel is just simply spinning. looks like it has something on it. hoping for it to boot correctly.

and yeah i also placed the new video card in that makes no difference. but yeah. fresh start

i burned the dmg, iso, cdr image onto a dvd in the apple map thingie format so ppcs can boot from it. that does not appeared in the alt menu at startup. i tried putting leopard onto my usb thumb drive. tried every format every way i could possibly do it but none of em were listed in the foot menu of my g5.

need some help again:/

Most PPC Macs cannot boot from USB, but what did you use to burn the DVD on the PC?

Have you got any documentation to back this up? As far as I can see Apple only document USB booting on Intel Macs.

I have booted G5's from USB & the kids over on MacOXHints were doing it back in 2006…

I know it is tough to know which models will boot USB, it seems to be particular versions of open firmware, so if you have some info that says 'Mac x,x' can't boot from USB it would be appreciated.

Where are you getting the image of Leopard from? How did you burn it?

It should be a case of directly burning the disk image in Disk Utility (not the mounted image). You shouldn't have to tweak any partition types if the disk image was created from the Leopard image correctly.

What does the contents of the DVD look like?

BDAqua, is correct about USB booting - it is unclear wether this model will boot from USB, you will need to use Firewire or image the install disk onto an internal disk.

Must be some Firmware version, no known list, but for me personally...

G5 Quad will not, even with the Single User commands.

3 Mini 1.42s, never tried.

2 QS G4s, would with the Single User commands.

3 MDs, never tried.

eMac 1.42, yes from either Startup Disk CP or alt boot... until I did a Firmware reset-all, then only via Single User commands, disappeared from Startup Disk CP & alt boot.

eMac 1.0, yes via alt boot.

eMac 800, yes via alt boot.

iMac 600, yes, OS9 or OSX from Startup Disk CP, possibly due to Intech Drivers installed.

I can't remember all the rest, have heard of some Powerbooks that can reliably do it, also, sometimes it'll show in Startup Disk CP but refuse to boot, whenever I've seen it on alt boot it works.

And of course I've seen many replies saying any PPC Mac can do it using the Single User commands, but that hasn't been true for me for ALL. 🙂
