10.10.2 Causes Mac Pro Shutdown When Ejecting External Hard Drives

I'm working with Apple support to fix the issue, but I figured I'd put up this post in case anyone else is experiencing this issue since updating their Mac Pro to 10.10.2. Last Friday, we updated two the three Mac Pros at our office and since then the computers shutdown (screen goes black and then the computer reboots) when we unplug or even sometimes just eject an external hard drive (we use Lacie D2s with a thunderbolt connection). I've been meticulously troubleshooting (I am a professional video editor so definitely have a decent amount of technical know how) and was on the phone with an Apple Senior Technical advisor for over an hour and couldn't find a solution. The one Mac Pro that hasn't been updated yet, has no such issue.

I have not received confirmation from Apple yet that 10.10.2 is to blame, but I can't see what else could be causing the problem. Right now I'm downloading Mavericks to check if returning to the old OS solves the issue. Please chime in in you are experiencing the same issue and hopefully Apple gets this figured out quickly.

There are many posts of the 2103 Mac shutting down on a kernel panic after updating to 10.10.2 when they powered off a Thunderbolt drive enclosure. Ejecting the disk first did not help. It was reported for both Lacie and OWC TB enclosures. Just yesterday or so someone posted that it did not happen with a Pegasus TB enclosure.

I have not seen it reported before that it Mac shutdown/panics when the disk is just ejected.

I am having a similar issue (mine gives a kernel panic, the it restarts) with a Lacie d2 USB3/Thunderbolt HD. I guess for now I will try unplugging first before powering off the unit. Not ideal, but until Apple fixes this, its the only choice.

Is it safe to disconnect the cable without powering off the hard disk?lots of valuable file.without the option to copy the files to a new hard disk

Ihave not problem just make sure you eject the drive before unplugging the Thunderbolt cable

Just adding to the list of people with this issue.

My upgrade to 10.10.2 behaved oddly - it appeared to crash/hang in the middle of the upgrade, and after a couple of hours, I just force reboot the machine. Since then, if I have an external USB-connected drive attached on boot, the machine just sits on a black screen. If I unplug the drive, it boots fine. I've noticed odd behavior with various video hits occurring. I use displayport/thunderbolt monitors. I also have noticed that my wifi doesn't work anymore - it's locked on "off" and says no hardware installed... thinking I need to call apple on this one...

Exactly the same problem with a Drobo 5D and a Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo. Never had any problem before 10.10.2 on my MacBook Pro. Now, I really must not forget to disconnect the Thunderbolt cable before shutting down the external disk.

I don't think resetting the SMC will do anything. Any body tried ?

I have a drobo 5D too, but figured out that my upgrade to 10.10.2 must have been funky. I restarted in repair mode (command+R) and reinstalled the OS on the machine. Since then, it started functioning properly, however I still have a strange video issue when I shut down, but at least I can access my drobo, and the system boots normally.

Just curious (i have this issue also with 4 OWC thunderbays) if 10.8.3 or anything else has fixed this. thanks in advance. mike.

I've been having this same problem with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch) and a 3 gb LaCie d2 THB USB3. The recent 10.10.3 upgrade did not fix the problem. This particular drive has a USB 3 interface and when I connect via that, instead of thunderbolt, everything seems stable.

Same problem with late 2014 15" Macbook Pro Retina and CalDigit T3 thunderbolt enclosure. Come on Apple. The first step is admitting you have a problem with Yosemite. Next step is to fix it! PC's are starting to sound more attractive every day.
