My Macbook suddenly running slow - TimeVault??

Hello,

Ever since I downloaded the latest upgrade (Yosemite 10.10.2) my computer has been almost unusable. It is extremely slow. I'll type and it spinswheels, music skips and freezes, powering it on and off is a production and apps take forever to load. After positing on another thread about another slow Macbook, a community member identified the source of my problem as FileVault, so I opened it in System Preferences to turn it off, but the process of encryption had already started for which turning TV off was impossible. Right now, the TV screen is where it was 9 hours ago. The progress bar is only 1/5 full and it says "Estimating time remaining..."

How long is this giong to take? And will my computer be back to normal when it's done/when I turn it off? Also, what can I do in the meantime to either speedy up the process or to make my Mac a bit more competent... I'm in college and this is really crippling!!

Thanks!

The first thing to do is following:

UNINSTALL CleanMyMac !!

Start CleanMyMac, in the left navigation panel choose Uninstall, and then uninstall CleanMyMac.

Then go to SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems, in there remove all entries with the minus sign underneath.

Then Restart the Mac.

Then disable File Vault.

There are more softwares to remove, but before I can discuss that I want to know what you did exactly with CleanMyMac.

PS read the other thread post also.

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.

In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.

Then, from the menu bar, select

File ▹ Turn Off Encryption

Enter the password again.

You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.

If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select

Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

from the Format menu.

You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.

Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

Hey, I'm having the same problem!!!, Last week I updated my macbook pro 9,2 to the latest version of yosemite (I had time vault activated too), first it took 3 hours to complete the update and after it finished, my computer became so slow and I were not able to use it. I decided to make a backup of my files which took 56 hours to complete (it was really slow), after that, I used the recovery mode to erase the disk and make a clean installation of Lion (It took about 3 hours to download and about 8 to install). This morning when the installation was completed, I started using Lion and the problem is still present!! I tried to install the office suite but every time the installers open, it freezes!. I don't know what to do, its freaking me out. I'm also a college student and I need to work on my computer every day!. Please help!

Sorry for not getting back to you quicker. How do I disable Time Vault?

Also, here's the new report:

Sorry, the one I posted initially in the thread was before I uninstalled CleanMyMac. To do so I moved it to Trash and emptied Trash. Is that okay?

If you want to preserve the data on the startup drive, and it's not already backed up, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.

There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive or other storage device to hold the data.

1. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.

If you use FileVault 2, then you must first unlock the startup volume. Select its icon ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. Enter your login password when prompted.

2. If Method 1 fails because of disk errors, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.

3. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

4. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

The only way to properly remove software is with the vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never manually delete files. Never use an "app zapper" or "clean up" program. If you have done one of those things, then you should reinstall the software in question and then properly uninstall it. Some times of "grey ware" may not have a functional uninstaller. You will have to look here in the forums for instructions. I believe the people have reported that the uninstaller for "Clean My Mac" is one of those that does not work.

Unfortunately, you simply do not have fast enough hardware to run Yosemite. You need one of a) 8 GB RAM (or more), b) an SSD hard disk, or c) a machine made since 2013. Add up how many of those you have and that will tell you how well Yosemite will run. To make matters worse, notebook hard drives tend to fail after 3 years anyway.

I suggest you contact OWC (http://www.macsales.com) and purchase at least 8 GB RAM, an SSD hard disk, and a large USB backup disk. Total cost will be about $400, buy it will be like getting a brand new machine.

No.

CleanMyMac2's instructions state that you must use CleanMyMac to uninstall CleanMyMac. However, that's a moot point because as etresoft wrote, their instructions do not rid your Mac of all its components. Exactly what those remaining components do is known only to them. Given the fact their own uninstallation instructions remain incorrect despite their recent claims to the contrary, their competence is called into question, casting doubt upon whether even they know the reason.

What is known is that actually using CleanMyMac to alter your system can easily result in irreversible corruption, and the degree of that corruption cannot be determined from the information you provided. The only way to recover from that is to restore your Mac from a backup preceding that corruption.

If you would like specific instructions, ask. The prerequisite will be to create a backup. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.

Hi, I finally Uninstalled CleanMyMac using CleanMyMyMac. Then I saw that there was still a CleanMyMac file (the installation packet) which I put in the trash because it didn't give me an option to remove otherwise...)

Anyway, then I was ale to restart in Recovery mode and this time I was able to turn off encryption. When I restarted my computer and opened the FileVault window on System Preferences it said "9 hours remaining" to Decrypt.. I left it like that all night and this morning, 9 hours later, it says "Estimating Time Remaining" and the progress bar is about 4/5 full (which, if I remember correctly is the same as it was last night...)

Also, I have been trying to back everything up but my computer is not showing the hard drive in Finder so I can't do it manually. Time Machine seems to be reading it because when I plug it in it prepares for backup but before anything happens I get a notification saying that I ejected the disk incorrectly. My disk (a Hitachi with 500GB - I'm not quite sure of the model but I bought it when I bought my computer in late 2011, blinks a blue light that sometimes is just lit without blinking... I don't know what any of it means... I would hate to have to buy a new one... What are your thoughts?

My Macbook suddenly running slow - TimeVault??
