My Macbook suddenly running slow - TimeVault??

Hello,

Ever since I downloaded the latest upgrade (Yosemite 10.10.2) my computer has been almost unusable. It is extremely slow. I'll type and it spinswheels, music skips and freezes, powering it on and off is a production and apps take forever to load. After positing on another thread about another slow Macbook, a community member identified the source of my problem as FileVault, so I opened it in System Preferences to turn it off, but the process of encryption had already started for which turning TV off was impossible. Right now, the TV screen is where it was 9 hours ago. The progress bar is only 1/5 full and it says "Estimating time remaining..."

How long is this giong to take? And will my computer be back to normal when it's done/when I turn it off? Also, what can I do in the meantime to either speedy up the process or to make my Mac a bit more competent... I'm in college and this is really crippling!!

Thanks!

Can I possibly get a reliable one for under $200? Maybe under $100?

Yes. A 1 TB external USB hard disk drive, twice the capacity of your Mac's source volume and five times your present usage, can be purchased for about $60 US.

"Reliable" is relative. All consumer grade hard disk drives should be considered wear items that should be discarded at the first indication of failure, because after such a failure occurs it should no longer be considered reliable. For that reason, two or more redundant backup devices are advantageous.

You are only "at risk" of losing everything if what you need is not backed up elsewhere, and no more so at risk than anyone else without a reliable backup strategy.
