Year view not showing location summary

I have a problem with the new photos app on iPhone6 and Yosemite 10.10.3.

In the "year view" places where the photos were taken can usually be accessed in a map (e.g. "United States, Germany and 3 more >").

I have several years of photos and this does work for most of them, but for 2 years (2013 and 2014) there is no location or countries displayed I could tap on to open the map view so I can see what places I visited in those years.

When I zoom in to collections or moments however, every single photo does have location data.

The photos app seems to fail summarizing my places. The problem is the exact same on iPhone and on the new photos app in Yosemite (turning on or off iCloud photo library doesn't make a difference here).

Also tried the following: I deleted all photos from my iPhone and sync them again via iTunes. When I did this while having the photos app open in the year view, I could see that the years 2013 and 2014 at first have this link to the map but as more photos are synced both disappear.

Any ideas on this? Please help

I had the same issue and i went through every possible scenarios, but i ended with only one conclusion. There's a max number of countries that can appear and that number is 7. If there are more than 7 countries, then they won't show up.

This year i traveled alot, so i was puzzled when all of a sudden the countries i visited were not showing up anymore. So i dug into it, and when everything else failed, i started deleting photos from different countries. so while i was deleting, they suddenly showed up. "XXX, YYY, ZZZ and 4 more >". I said good, they're back. So i started recovering deleted photos.... and.... the countries disappeared again.

I deleted Other country (XXX) and now it was: "SSS, YYY, ZZZ and 4 more >". Then i recovered the photos from XXX country and they disappeared again.

So... no matter which country i deleted, as soon as there were max 7 countries, the countries were listed in the Years view.

As soon as there is an additional country (8 or more), the country list disappeared.

It doesn't matter the distance between them on map, i had countries from North America and Europe listed, and i could see them on map. When i deleted North America, i only had countries from Europe listed under the current year, but as soon as i added a photo from an 8th country (even if it's from Europe and it's "in close proximity" on map) the country list disappears.

So... my conclusion is that the magic number is 7. The max countries that can be listed.

I have exactly the same problem, in my case with the year 2014, in which indeed I visited more than 7 countries. For 2015 I was showing I visited 7 countries so far, so I thought let's see what happens when I add a new photo from a different country.

I added a picture with no location, then changed the location to a new (8th) country, and as expected, the location data in the year view disappeared. Next, I removed the picture, expecting to see the location data back again, but unfortunately it did not come back! Also, when I permanently removed this picture from the 'recently removed' album, the location data in the year view still didn't come back. So now I'm having two years without data...

I'm certainly going to give feedback to Apple about this.

That is really bad!

And only seven countries per year is just too limiting. One long distance flight while taking pictures from the window of a plane, and we'll have exceeded our yearly limit of seven countries. Most of the year views in my Photos library don't show the places. The missing maps for long distance travels are taking the fun out of the Places feature.

As a work-around, I have hidden photos in the moments, that would cause to have more countries in the year - areal photos out of the plane on long distance flights for example. Or photos taken while sailing - all photos with a location showing as somewhere on the water, e.g. "North Atlantic Ocean". Hidden photos will only be hidden from the library views Moments, Years, Collections, but show in the albums. This way I can reduce the number of countries in the Years and still see the photos in the albums. Before I hide the photos, I add a keyword "Hide Temporarily", so I can quickly find the photos hidden for this reason.

I was hoping the new Memories in Photos on Sierra could be used to get again decent maps for long distance travels, since the maps in the Moments and collections are limited to one state, but the maps in the memories are also disappointing.

For example, if I create a Memory album from the photos of our trip to the Antarctic peninsula (with stop overs in Argentina, Chile, the Easter Island), the map in the Memory will only show one places marker - at the airport of our home town, but no places markers on the Southern Hemisphere at all, the important locations and destinations of that voyage are all missing from the map.

Myself had the same issue and deleted some countries and when it limited to seven countries, Hooray !!

How did you delete the countries?

I found that it helps simply to hide the photos taken during a flight over the ocean. Photos taken over the sea also count as taken in a different country. For hidden photos the locations are not visible, and hidden photos do not appear in the moments, collections, years, but they are visible in the albums.

I deleted the photos from specific countries,

Yes, that will reduce the numbers of countries too. If you want to keep the photos in your library, hiding them with "Image > Hide Photo ⌘L" should suffice. This way, you can still see the photos in the Hidden Photos album, but without location information, and the hidden photos do not appear in Moments, Collections, Years. This way you can temporarily reduce the number of countries in year view, without deleting photos from your library.
