How Long Should an iPad2 Last in Sleep Mode please?

Hi All,

Due to physical damage I bought a replacement (refurbished) iPad2 from the Apple Store in London. It has the same iOS (8.1.3) as previous iPad and I restored all files, settings and apps from iTunes so the new iPad was therefore identical to the one it replaced. However, it looks like there are battery issues so wanted to ask for advice please.

SLEEP MODE

My previous iPad lasted for weeks in sleep mode (EG it still had 25% after being left at home for 14 days) The replacement iPad was lasting less than 1 day in sleep mode with no use. Overnight (7h) it is losing at least 25-30%. This with all the same iOS, settings, Apps, Charger etc as the previous iPad.

To try and improve this I performed the following actions:

Closed all apps (double click sweep off the screen)

Disabled iCloud keychain

Disabled background app refresh

Disabled location services

Set Allow Notifications to OFF

Disabled auto-brightness and set it to low

Airplane mode to disable WiFi and Mobile data

I then performed a hard reset / switch off and gave it a full uninterrupted charge using iPad charger for 12+ hours.I turned on iPad at 2pm disconnected charger (100%) and put it into sleep mode with the sleep button. The battery lasted until 3:45pm the next day (25.75 hours)

According to the original specs:

Apple claimed

Standby: Up to 720h

Usage: Up to 10hr (I am yet to test the in-use performance of my replacement iPad - working on that tomorrow)

I appreciate that iOS8 is heavier on battery use but I didn't notice a significant difference on the original iPad when I updated it and with my normal usage pattern I was charging the old one about once a week. This new iPad needs charging daily and is being outlasted by my iPhone 4S (also on iOS8).

Please can anyone advise on what they are getting on an iPad2 with 8.1.3 so I can compare and let me know what I should do next?

Thanks,

Ian

OK. Problem resolved by the Apple Store:

I took in the iPad, complete with the evidence that it was only lasting 20 - 25 hours in standby (screen shots etc), complete with the list of all the power-saving changes I had made (full charge, hard reset,Disabled iCloud keychain, Disabled background app refresh, Disabled location services, Set Allow Notifications to OFF, Disabled auto-brightness and set it to low, Set airplane mode to disable WiFi and Mobile data etc). They ran some diagnostics and found a number of apps were crashing (potentially eating power) and that according to the battery monitor I had never fully charged the iPad and these two issues were the reason it was not lasting long. I stood my ground and pointed out that it being through 16 overnight power cycles, charging with the Apple iPad charger and showed them the screen grabs I had taken of the iPad during all my tests and these showed that the meter was at 100% each time at the beginning of the test.

After speaking to the manager they agreed to replace the iPad with a new one. However, it came with iOS 7.1.2 out of the box so rather than update I set it up as a new iPad to see how long it lasted. This is well over a week on a full charge with regular use, rather than 1 day with no use at all. Now there is one app I had that will only run on iOS 8, however, I can live without it as I don't need it. So my dilemma now: 'to upgrade or not to update' it's a question... I know users moan about iOS8 power consumption and if I want to restore my backup I will have to upgrade but should I stick with 7.1.2....? What percentage drop in time between charges should I expect?

Thanks!

I have an iPad 2, iOS 8.1.3. I have used it heavily for 4 years. I'm not sure about sleep times but on average I will get anywhere from 8 -10 hours use before having to recharge depending on what apps I am using. Those apps include Email, Safari, games, art apps, photo editing apps & music production. Wifi is always on & I charge it most every night.

hooe this helps.

Thanks. On my original iPad I could get between 9 and 11 hours wifi VOD. The replacement was just over 4 hours. The replacement for the replacement lasted 11h15m yesterday running wifi VOD so I am happy now. It does seem that the battery was an issue of the first replacement but it was on 8.1.3 as opposed to 7.1.2 on the latest replacement so can't directly compare. However, if you are getting between 8 and 10h on 8.1.3 it sounds pretty close so I might take the risk and update...

Cheers!

FWIW I have the iPad 2 running 8.1.3 and there has no been no change in battery performance since I bought it new back when it was released. As for updates killing battery life that will always happen to someone somewhere no matter what device you are on but the vast majority never has a problem. You only hear from the few who were effected and so the perception updates kill battery life is quite skewed.
