How do I (or can I) view the same folders on an iPhone as I see on my desktop?

Tap first on the account name (not "All inboxes"). Tap on the folder name.

That "Synchronize" bit didn't seem to work at all and to be correct about this I saw "Synchronize "nyc.rr.com" " and not the folder I was clicking on-was that as you intended? I then went on and tried your other suggestion of a rebuild, which I took to mean a rebuild of the new folder. In any case this didn't do anything on the iMac.

Yes, it will say "Synchronize <name of the account>". Rebuild works one folder at a time.

I've never tried to add a folder to an account, so I don't know if the old messages will sync. They may not, as they are not on the server and not flagged to sync to the server. You can try experimenting with a few old messages in one folder; do something that changes them, like add a flag, and see it that causes them to sync. Something that probably would cause them to sync is to drag an old message to a different folder. Then either leave it there, or drag it back.

I did try your last suggestion, but it didn't work-so we didn't really learn anything from that attempt as it wasn't clear if it would do anything or not.

But your last few notifications that came in via Apple email should've been sent to the new Apple folder now residing under nyc.rr.com, but they didn't and when downloaded to the iPhone they didn't appear there either. So do those non-actions tell you anything?
