Hey everybody,

I also was experiencing the unknown error -42018 when attempting to download purchased music. Additionally, I was stuck in an endless authorization loop when attempting to play previously purchaed music. All this started when I installed the latest iTunes software 7.0.2.

I run windows XP Pro, and unlike the majority of users I actually set it up correctly with a dedicated administrator account, and regular user accounts instead of just running as admin all the time. For me, that was the cause of the problem.

The new version of iTunes software required FULL CONTROL privilages on the iTunes and iPod install directories for all user accounts that were using the program. (Previous versions worked fine, so this is a new thing.) Once I provided those permissions, iTunes worked correctly. Follow this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040 for information on how to provide FULL CONTROL to every user account.

I hope you all find this helpful in solving your problem.

Good Luck,
Bill

Ok I just wish to let you know that I found out the problem. And, yes, the problem comes from the Firewall settings. In my case, I have Norton Internet Security (anti-viruses program)on my computer. You just open your anti-viruses program, click firewall + customize. and, under programs you have to find apple iTunes and then modify the Internet access to automatic. And Voilà! Hope it helps. Happy Holidays to everyone! See ya!

The only firewall I'm using is Windows Firewall, which iTunes' own diagnostics shows is set up properly. I have Symantec Anti-Virus, but that's all it is - it's not a firewall program. And even shutting it down (just in case) doesn't make any difference. I still get the same error every time "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Stores. The network connection was refused."

Crap! I've been coming here since the first week of October looking for someone from Apple to show some concern about this issue, and thus far I see no reaction.
