I have an iPad 2 running iOS 8. The email app is not working. The screen shows empty email box, then closes on its own. I have tried closing the app, turning ipad on and off and reset to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Try doing the reset or force quitting the mail app

Reset

Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. No data will be lost.

Force close an app

Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.

hi all, I just had the same problem and could not resolve it, at first. I then went to settings, opened the mail app, went to one of my accounts in the app, the one I use most happens to be the gmail account and just closed the mail account, by moving over the button. then went to the mail app and it began to work.

I reopend the mail app and every thing is back to order... try it, lost nothing!

I have seen this problem. Unfortunately, nothing we tried - including force quitting the app & restarting, deleting then re-adding the email account on the iPad, or upgrading iOS to the latest version - worked. The user even went to the Apple Store, to see if they could fix it, and they couldn't. They suggested resetting the entire device ("Erase All Content and Settings"), but the user wasn't comfortable doing that, as he was concerned about losing specific settings within his third-party apps if he did a full reset, so SHORT of doing a full reset, I would suggest a workaround: There is a free app called CloudMagic Email, which is a really good mail client. Install that, and you'll have access to your mail again (You might even like it better than the native mail client). It's not a SOLUTION, but a viable workaround. Let me know if this works for you.

OKay, go to settings, scroll down to the mail icon, you probably have written next to it mail, calendar and contacts, open that icon. Then go to your gmail account or another account you have. Move the switch to white. Then got back to your main menu and open the mail app. it should work again. If it does, go back to your settings same steps as above to just reopen the account you have just closed. If it does not work, close and reopen another account. Blessings!

This didn't work for me, sadly. Switched off the account I had been using, no change. Switched off all other accounts, same thing. Other attempts that also failed: Took App out of memory. Cleared another 1.5GB of memory. Rebooted. Hard Reset.

On IOS 8.3 and had been for some time. Nothing I know changed - working 1 minute, not 30 mins later. Account definitely working as can still run through GMail app. Mail opens up with 'template' columns and headings but otherwise white screen. After say 20 seconds screen goes fully black (not reverse as some others have described), then after another 5 seconds or so closes out back to top-level screen

Updating to 8.4 now but don't expect that to help. Will advise if it does.

Further to above, upgrading to IOS 8.4 WORKED for me 🙂.

I had all 5 of my mail accounts turned off, as per advice in earlier replies, but don't know if this was necessary.

When I restarted it still failed the first try at opening Mail. Doubt it's relevant but that was in portrait mode, as that's what the upgrade seemed to want to talk.

As usual just the icons were visible. I flipped to landscape mode to compare and lo, it came up asking me to set up an account. And didn't die!

So I went back to settings and turned on the accounts again and all seems to be working fine.

Thanks for all suggestions and help above.
