iMac running slow

I have a desktop which is just over 3 years old. Since I've installed Yosemite, it has been running slow. I get the rainbow wheel going round and round for several seconds every time I use Safari. It also happens when I open my own files and folders so it has nothing to do with my broadband speed, which is good. It seems to get a bit faster the longer I am using it. There is plenty of disc space, as I've used only about a quarter. Any ideas.

If this is yours:

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i7-3.4-27-inch-alumin um-mid-2011-thunderbolt-specs.html

then you can go much higher. However, 8 GB should be fine - so you want to buy a 2 x 2 or 2 x 4 GB kit from either OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial:

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2011/DDR3_21.5_27

(check your model ID to make sure this is it - see how to on that page)

Then go here:

to watch the how-to video.
