Upgrading from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 stuck in restart

Trying to upgrade iMac from 10.5.8. Installed snow leopard 10.6.3, now trying to install software update to 10.6.8 so I can download Yosemite. Screen stuck in middle of the restart process, just showing purple star page. Is this normal? It's been about half an hour.

Hi Eric, thanks for your input, however I was finally able to install or upgrade from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 by utilizing this software download: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. It was successful, I'm now also able to restart the computer as well.

But now I face a different problem, I now need to acquire another startup disk in order to REPAIR my HDrive. I went through "Disk Utilities", did the "verification" process, and it indicated that I need to restart my computer with a mac osx "installation disk" and then go through with the repair process. Unfortunately, I don't have my disks that came with the computer anymore, and I did borrow a friends startup disks but they turned out to be incompatible with my computer. So I'm going to try and utilize the "restore" process by uploading my contents onto an external disk, from there I'll reboot from that (I think?), and then I'll wipe my current HD clean! I'm trying to follow the instructions layed out on the computer as I go through this process. I think this may be the only solution to my dilemma, if you know of an easier or alternate way of going through this process I welcome your input. Thanks!

Not sure what you are referring with a "restore" process? Snow Leopard does not include the recovery options which were made available with later OS versions.

If you wish to boot from an external hard drive, you will need to boot from a bootable clone. You can then boot from that, wipe your internal drive, and clone your system back. Or, you can order a retail Snow Leopard disk from the Apple store and use it.

The restore I'm talking about is in the "Disk Utilities", According to what I read "I think" I'm able to go through this restore process which after looking at it my understanding is that what ever contents I want to save to an external drive, it will save that and then "I think" it says to boot from that external drive, then come back to my internal drive to now proceed with the repair? I'm not sure, I've never done this before, and I'm not a computer person. But if this fails then I'll have to figure something else out.

How do I make a bootable clone? or Where can I get one? Btw, Thanks for your help!
