IOS 8.2 update caused my iMessage to stop working

I just updated my iPhone 4S to IOS 8.2 today, March 9th, and now my iMessage doesn't work. It says it's, "waiting for activation". I can't send or receive texts with iMessage but standard SMS texts seem to work fine. Did this happen to anyone else after updating? If so, did anyone fix it? I've already tried the basic trouble shooting solutions like restarting, hard rebooting, turning my iMessage on and off, resetting my network settings, etc...

I have got iMessage and Facetime activated on my phone number in iOS 8.2.... Finally!

Thanks to the Apple Support representative, who helped me fix this annoying issue. I guess it was not so complex after all - just the same steps (which i did before) but now they were done in a particular order. She also checked the iMessage activation server status and there were no issues with it.

Here is what we did to solve the issue:

1. Signed out of Apple ID in both iMessage and Facetime.

2. Turned Off Message and Facetime.

3. Reset All Settings

4. Once back up, turned on Wifi.

5. Turned on iMessage (making sure MMS and SMS options were on).

iMessage got activated instantly on my phone number. Next, I signed in using my Apple ID and the email IDs were now activated on iMessage.

6. Turned on Facetime.

Facetime got activated instantly on my phone number. Next, I signed in using my Apple ID and the email IDs were now activated on Facetime.

All good!

Hope it helps others who are facing activation issues!

BTW: My iCloud ID and Apple ID are the same.

I guess to be fair, maybe I didn't wait long enough. When I upgraded and restored my backup I immediately went to messages where it hung up for about 30 seconds before opening. When it did, it went to only the last message in the chain. Then clicked on another and it went to a "send new message" screen. Just as before and exactly how Dundee_DD described his problem.

Maybe iMessage and FaceTime hadn't been activated yet? I didn't have time to wait. It was either restore to 8.1.3 at that time or risk having my old problem until getting back to work the next day. The thing is when I have gone back to 8.1.3 each time, there was no lag or activation waiting period.

I probably will just wait until another update and live with the "1" on my settings icon!

Hi, I was having the same issue after updating to iOS 8.2. iMessage was stuck on Waiting for Activation.

What worked for me was that I had 3 addresses active under send and receive option in iMessage, namely my mobile number, my apple id email and my personal email id. I removed the personal email id from the addresses, turned iMessage off and then on and everything got sorted out instantly. Both Face Time and iMessage are active now. Added back the personal email id once iMessage activation was successful. Hope this helps.

I had no luck with resetting networks, resetting everything, airplane mode, etc... My iMessage was't working, could receive texts from non iPhones but no iPhones mssg's, couldn't send ANY texts, and periodically couldn't make phone calls.

I followed Ludo2000's post and it worked, just downgraded back to 8.1.3. All is fine again.

I was confused (when on the ipsw.me website) to if I had a GSM phone or a CDMA phone.. they had the same model # (1533). So, I just took a chance and downloaded the GSM one. I'm with Rogers in Canada if that helps anyone. I attached Ludo2000's post below...

Everyone you don't need to restore your device to downgrade follow this video it's not the right versions but it's the same process. Just download the file from ipsw.me select your device and iOS 8.1.3 but make sure it has a green tick if it has a red x then you're too late when downloaded in iTunes connect your device back it up when back up is finished hold Option (Mac) Shift (Windows) while holding Option/Shift click update a little window will pop up select that file you downloaded and click open then a window will pop up saying iTunes will update your iPhone to iOS 8.1.3 and verify the update with Apple. click update and this will actually downgrade your device without losing any personal data. http://https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sWHCRNBY8fA

Thanks! I did that the second time, and maybe in a minute for a third. I tried Restore the first time to the backup just after the 8.2 was added. But of course the "8.2" data wouldn't work with 8.1.3.

Anyway, as far my luck with the update, I once again did the update and followed everyone's little tricks and suggestions within this loop. Still stuck on messages, whether iMessage or others. It really seems as my phone is getting hung up on downloading all the messages in each chain I click. Loads some of the previous ones every five or so minutes then gets stuck again. That's why I gave it the weekend to try to load them all. Problem is, once I leave that chain, eventually it goes back to the beginning again and repeats the process. 8.1.3 goes back pretty far, then asks to load older messages which it does with no problem.

I think I'll send my phone in to Apple for them to look at. Bought this 128 Gig 6 Plus in November and I would think paying $599 for a phone, it would do what it's supposed to do.
