Safari no longer works after iOS 8.2 update.

I installed the iOS 8.2 update and Safari will not work at all. If I tap a bookmark, it just freezes. If I manually enter a search term or a url it doesn't respond at all. I read about some other (not the same) issues with Safari and the common advice was to restore from an iCloud backup, which I have done, to no avail. Anyone else having the same issue? Anyone else able to RESOLVE the same issue, and if so, HOW??

AmishCake was right: since this is not a widespread issue there is no guarantee of a timely fix. I got sick of waiting and attempted a downgrade to 8.1.3 on the iPad without restoration from backup, which is much faster but by no means bug-free. Lo and behold Safari works again. Some apps have to be reinstalled, though YMMV.

PS Worked on iPhone as well. Reset phone beforehand and it kept all the apps. Keeps tempting me to "upgrade" to 8.2. HA! 😠

Settings > Safari > Advanced

Turn JavaScript from ON to OFF.

This is the problem that has been causing the lock-up.

Once you've turned JavaScript OFF, make sure you close Safari, then you can turn JavaScript back ON and reopen Safari.

My GUESS, is there's a bad piece of code floating around in ADs or something and it's locking up JavaScript. Turning JavaScript OFF, resets it. Just a guess on my part, but this seems to fix the problem.

Same problem here: Safari completely non-functional on my iPhone 6 after updating to iOS 8.2, refusing to load any web-pages. Instead, it appears get stuck while trying to load web-pages, and sometimes the app seems to crash after a period of nothing happening. Very occasionally (maybe one attempt in fifty, or one attempt in a hundred) it will load a single web-page successfully before immediately returning to the usual behaviour of not any loading pages.

I think I've tried all the suggested methods to fix the problem e.g.

  • Turning JavaScript off and on;
  • Turning off iCloud Keychain, turning off iCloud Safari sync and deleting web history
  • Resetting network settings
  • Erasing the phone and restoring from iCloud backup
  • Erasing the phone, reinstalling firmware from iTunes and restoring from iTunes backup.

Nothing resolves it - Safari always remains broken on the iPhone. I don't see any such issue on my iPad, where Safari works fine after the upgrade to iOS 8.2

For information, during this process of trying to get Safari working, it's noticeable that trying to turn off iCloud Keychain doesn't always work - that is, it automatically re-enables itself the moment the switch is toggled to off.

Google Chrome works fine, which means there is at least some kind of workaround possible. However, It's a shame that Apple's QA process didn't identify this problem before iOS 8.2 was released - not being able to use Safari is a pretty serious issue. Still, they're only human, and anyone can screw up - what counts now is the speed with which they're able to resolve the problem.

What makes you think it's not a wide-ranging issue - I see plenty of people on Twitter saying that Safari is completely broken for them in iOS 8.2, including some fairly high-profile people. I haven't reported it to Apple yet - I will file a bug report when I get some time.

In the meantime, I hope and expect that some enthusiastic members of the iOS Safari team are taking some time to browse these discussion forums and social media to see how their work is doing in the outside world, and so are aware of the problem.
