Hello,

I am at the bottom of the ladder with knowledge about the photos OP and iCloud Programs, but from what I have seen on this forum is sad. When I switched from a 386 PC to an iMac, I eliminated all the hassle PC's were noted for when installing software and games. The Mac was smooth and flawless. How times have changed and how badly Mac has slipped in providing this service. When a Mac user is so frustrated he is willing to go back to PC's, that has to tell Mac something. As for me, I think I will stay with my older G5 to manage my photos and movies until these software messes are cleaned up.

Fortunately there are folks like Old Toad that have taken the time to understand all the new processes using multi devices, and these folks have been a great help. For now one has a choice of learning the new OP's or keep using the old Op's.

You know my choice.

Hi all iCloud Photos Library Stallers!

I wanted to note how I solved my Stall issue somewhere in the interwebs so I thought I'd do it here.

Problem: My 200GB + Photos Library stopped uploading to iCloud Photo Library after 60 Gb or so. After researching the web a bit I found the place where all the fotos/videos are cached before upload:

user/pictures/photoslibrary/private/com.apple.cloudphotosd/CloudSync.noindex/eng ine/filecache/

(open the photos library with a right click and 'show package contents')

In this folder you'll find a lot of folders from A through to Z. In here the cached files are saved while uploading. If you do a search within this filecache folder (just enter "." in the search field of the finder and also click on "filecache" to just search in that particular folder) you'll find all the files that are currently cached.

Deleting these files and by doing so forcing photos.app to recache these files helped me regain the upload. (don't forget to empty the trash after deleting the files)

But however, you cannot just delete all of these files because a task in the background (cloudd) is using these. So if the finder tells you you cannot delete some of these files do the following:

Quit Photos.App. Open the Activity Monitor App (in Applications/Utilities). Click in the 'Network' Tab. Look for the cloudd. Select cloudd and clickt on the 'x' button in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor App to quit the task. Then you should be able to delete all the cached files in the filecache folder. (If it still doesn't work, relaunch the finder with an alt-rightclick on the Finder Icon in the Dock of do a restart.

The File that caused the stall in my case was a movie that was somehow corrupt (Exporting this file from Photos the normal way always resulted in a error message). To find out which file exactly made the upload stall I selected the cloudd task in the Activity Monitor and then clicked on 'i' in the Tool bar for information. There you will find the 'Open files and ports' Tab. Click on there and look at the gibberish text popping up and disappearing again. Here you'll find a filename somewhere (in my case a .mp4 file). The filename here does not correlate with the name the same video has in the Photos.App so you'll have to copy the name (alot-of-letters-and-numbers.mp4) and look for this file in the filecache folder. Here you'll see the date this file was created and you can preview the clip. Now go and find the Clip in the Photos.App and delete it there (if you want to keep the file then export it from the Photos.App before you delete it). Be sure to delete the file in the 'recently deleted items' folder in Photos aswell.

Having had a Movieclip stall my upload I have now exported ALL my Videos from Photos, then deleted them so that only the Pics have to be synched to iCloud. I will then reimport the Videos in small batches into Photos and have them upload later. Hope that'll work!

Hope this solves some problems out there!

Cheers

Steve

Did any of you posting on this thread ever get it to finish? If so, what was the secret??

Don't see much recent activity here.

I've been uploading photos from a MBP for four solid weeks. Over 16000 items to upload. It has about 1470 to go. Now it is not uploading. Just sitting on the same item number for hours on end. It uploaded about 20 items in eight hours last night!! Using a direct wire Internet connection to the switch. Although WiFi seems to work about the same as a direct connection.

I uploaded a smaller batch on my new iMac 27" and it completed in about five days (around the clock). But I only had about 6,000 items to download and no big videos.

I think it might be uploading some very big videos, hence a lot of photo frames.

I just exited from Photo and started the upload again. Maybe a fresh start will help.

This shouldn't be this hard to do! Has Apple purposely made this a very slow upload??

Anyone have any other suggestions?

I went to a class at the Apple Store yesterday on how to manage the memory on my iPhone 6s yesterday and the instructor taught me to buy more iCloud storage and just start uploading. The upload went for 24 hours and got stuck somewhere along the way at only about 300 photos out of nearly 2300. I went back the Apple Store and we turned off my phone and rebooted, played with iCloud, left the photo app open (one of the 6 Apple geniuses I talked to at the store said this should help) and in the end I was able to upload another 30 photos. I have some 4:00 videos but still four hours later plugged in and on wifi here at the house nothing has happened. If it "just takes time" I figure I will lose use of my phone for about two weeks. Funny thing - no one at the Apple Store could figure this out and I just left.

This solution to my memory issues turned out to be a pain in the butt and I am worse off than before. I should have just done a back up to iTunes and leave it alone. This forum doesn't answer any of my questions either. Very frustrating.

Mine finally finished. This is a very painful procedure. I don't think Apples servers can handle the traffic and so only accept so much data to be uploaded. Right now is a bad time since they just upgrades both IOS AND OSX AND I'm sure lots are downloading the updates. It took a long time to update my iPhone 6S, my iPad 3 and my iMac 27" 5K. One thing I learned is that you can't let your device go to sleep, or the upload stops. So you must keep them plugged in and set to not sleep until the upload is finished.

Hang in there. Mine took over a week!

I can not guarantee if it will work for everyone, but mine when stuck actually was intensively moving on when connected to wifi and I was actively using photo app. Just simply looking at photos and videos for about 20 minutes forced upload to continue and to end very quickly after that. I even verified that on other device and it worked like a charm, but I didn't have that many videos.

Having the same issue here. Seriously thinking about migrating to Google Drive again. Used it for years and have never had any similar issue. Cannot actually believe i'm actually paying for 1TB drive!! I'm in contact with Apple support and hope they can provide me with a solution. Otherwise, going back to Google Drive in a couple of days! what a waste of time!

I had the problem to upload photos to library via iPhone and iPad since early April. Several engineers called me, called me, and called me, try and try, till now (June) I still have same problem, no tiny progress made!

Very disappointed -- but I told myself to be patient to Apple, they might solve my problem someday!
