Force Touch trackpad stopped working

I came home this evening to find that no haptic feedback is occurring when I click with my Early 2015 13" Retina Macbook Pro. I've only had it for 3 days.

Thankfully, I can still click because I had "Tap to click" selected under System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click.

Changing Click Pressure in the same window did not turn on haptic feedback. Deselecting and selecting "Force Click and haptic feedback" did not turn it back on. I have also logged out and restarted to no avail. Even in the screen to select the user to log in as, no clicks are registering. I have to type in the first few characters of the user name I want to login as for it to even select.

Am I stuck with returning this machine?

Same here dude.

In my case I had an system error, I could not shut down properly my MacBook Pro. Just like you restart did not help at all. I had to shut it down and power it up again. After that my trackpad worked properly.

I think it was some kind of software failure, since now my trackpad works fine.

Thank you for your suggestion Wingo2298 H. McErnestway12456738790, I will keep it in mind if the problem recurs.

Another thing I want to put on record, in connection with this issue, is this. When the force touch stops working what also stops working is the 'click slider' in system preferences for trackpad. It can't be moved - mine was always on medium - neither to light nor firm. It gets stuck on its current the setting! Very strange.

I let the 14 days from the day of purchase window for exchange pass because I don't suspect hardware to be at fault. But Apple should be aware of the problem and provide us with the fix.

Hi All

I bought a brand new MBP 15" with dedicated graphics and 1tb SSD Drive, after just 3 days of use the haptic feedback stops, albeit the track pad works regardless. Unfortunately I was travelling outside of UK and could not do a 14 day return. The feedback works for a few clicks when I do a shut down and restart but it stops. I have also installed windows 8.1 bootcamp, it doesn't work - if I do a shut down and restart it works. I have going over all the solutions and replies to this problem, looks like it's a random issue with the new force touch-pad, but it is worry some. Apple should seriously look into.

Here's my two sense, as a Apple Certified Mac Tech.

Force Touch is related to power settings so shutting down and powering back on will temporarly fix the issue but then it will most likely return.

I would suggest to anyone have this issue to do a System Management Controller (SMC Reset): Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

This resolved the issue on my Macbook Pro 13" 2015

Hope this helps.

October 4, 2015. Looking for new developments in this topic: Force Touch trackpad stopped working

I purchased a MBPro 15" retina, std base model, and having the same issues as other posters. Here's my $0.02:

1. When MBPro left in sleep mode, wake up (opening lid), reveals a non clickable, non tracking FT track pad.

2. I have the FT track pad disabled, when my Apple mouse is present.

3. "Restart" does fix the problem.

4. When I turn off Apple mouse, FT track pad becomes responsive again. (only after restart, not wake up)

5. I have "clicking" set to touch only, for ease of use

6. Issues were present prior to OS X El Capitan downloaded Oct. 2

7. When unresponsive, the FT Track pad feels "locked out". It's as if the gears, under the pad, are locked in the upward position.

Note: I highlighted #2, because, off the bat, the most reasonable explanation is that the FT Track pad is waking up looking for the mouse, instead of defaulting to itself. It's the same type of response you get if...let's say... I were to turn my mouse on right now... FT track pad locks out.

PS: I posted this here as a courtesy, for those who don't know, Apple rarely, if ever trolls these forums for fixes/answers/issues. I will send a copy of this post to Apple as well.

New development after a lengthy chat with Apple support. Here's the first fix I'm attempting:

System preferences-->Bluetooth-->Advanced...... Uncheck box for "Bluetooth Set up Assistant".

It's my theory that upon "wake up", Bluetooth Set up Assistant is searching for bluetooth devices, rather than defaulting to the Force Touch Track pad. This would explain why the track pad is locked out, as if the Apple mouse is already connected. Will follow up on this troubleshoot accordingly.

Having much the same issues:

- Most time Keyboard is also unresponsive

- Only started happening to me AFTER El Capitan

- System restart sometimes fixes the issue other times I'm getting a message that my Keyboard and Mouse / Trackpad isn't found

- SMC reset worked for a day

- Seems like only happening after prolonged sleep but also random

After Multiple calls to Apple Support I brought the Macbook Pro 13" (Early 2015) to a local apple authorized centre. They checked connections and reset the battery and SMC. Worked for a day and now having the same issues again. Going to return it back to the repair centre and see how it goes from there...
