Final Cut Pro X 10.0.6 is UNUSABLE!

Hello there,

I've just purchased an MacBook Pro (used), i7, 4GB Ram and 1TB. It came included with many great apps including FCP X, which I bought it for.

I do a lot of video editing as my job requires me too, but I am having great difficulties in using this Mac. In fact Final Cut Pro X is completely unusable! I cannot even open the application without the MacBook restarting due to a crash. Every time.

I've checked all the specifications and this Mac should be fine running Final Cut Pro X, so I need your help, desperately!

I'm not too computer savvy let alone, Mac savvy so please keep it simple.

Thank you.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Welcome to the family.

Sorry about your issues. Yours is a highly unusual situation and can probably be fixed. Might take some of the wonks a few days to walk you through it but these guys have seen it all.

Meantime. Do you have an Apple Store anywhere nearby? Make a genius appt but be sure you ask for someone who has a clue about FCPX. Most of those well-meaning folks do not know from video or big apps like FCPX, bless their iPhone-centric little hearts.

There have been some other threads here about forced restarts after launching FCP, try to search for some of those.

Your RAM should be bumped up as soon as you have the funds to do so.

I understand. I would visit the Apple Store and ask around if any employees are selling their 15" MacBook Pro's, or 2012 or later iMacs without the fusion drive. (The desktops are a better value since everything's self contained.) I mentioned NOT getting the fusion drive because the memory chache is too small for video rendering in my experience (I had to return one for that reason).

Thanks for all the help guys.

I've just spoken to the people I bought the laptop from and they said they've never had this issue before. They said they can try and fix the problem and let me know a workaround. Offer me a replacement item and hope it doesn't have the same issue on that model. A full refund. A partial refund up to 150 pounds for my troubles, then to wipe FCP from here, and use that 150 to buy FCP myself.

What do you people think? This laptop is i7, 4GB, 750GB HDD and Maverick OS I think. 15" - 800 pounds

I have also seen a private seller in my area, i7, 8GB, 750GB HDD with Yosemite 13.3" - 650 pounds

The 15" has a better graphics card for editing video, plus a bit more real estate to see your images. There really is no work around for the Final Cut Pro/Apple ID of purchaser issue. I would get the partial refund and use it for the new Final Cut Pro X purchase--that's golden! 4GB is sufficient to handle Yosemite, so no problem initially. I would recommend adding the 16 GB of RAM when you can, but you'll be fine now. Cheers!

The best option by far is setting up a Genius Bar appointment and have them wipe, install Yosemite, and run diagnostics. That way you won't have any fragmented files anywhere or any funky preference lists (yes, you will come to know plists very well in using the creative software like Pro Apps). The computer will run much smoother and it's a lot faster process through the Genius Bar. Plus they're right there to help. Do you have an Apple Store close?

The Genius Bar is inside the official Apple Stores. You go to their specific location website and click on the Genius Bar button and set up a reservation. A software restore like this is free, as are the diagnostics. You can be perfectly honest with them and let them know you're the second owner---that's not an issue at all. Macs hold their value well, so they're used to seeing them sold to a new user. Where in the UK are you?

Hay Daniel, are you in Oz (with the gumtree reference) or the UK (with the UKPounds pricing)? In any case you may be able to save significant bikkies on your upcoming FCPX purchase by funding it through discounted iTunes Cards. In Australia we regularly see 10%-25% discounts on iTunes cards from various retailers. I bought $400 worth of iTunes Cards for $300 which paid for FCPX at $380aud and gave a handy downpayment on Motion 5 as well.

Only issue was the offer was 2x$20 cards for $30; so I ended up with 20 $20 iTunes cards! I'm not sure if the UK does the same, but if so, get on it!
