Final Cut Pro X 10.0.6 is UNUSABLE!

Hello there,

I've just purchased an MacBook Pro (used), i7, 4GB Ram and 1TB. It came included with many great apps including FCP X, which I bought it for.

I do a lot of video editing as my job requires me too, but I am having great difficulties in using this Mac. In fact Final Cut Pro X is completely unusable! I cannot even open the application without the MacBook restarting due to a crash. Every time.

I've checked all the specifications and this Mac should be fine running Final Cut Pro X, so I need your help, desperately!

I'm not too computer savvy let alone, Mac savvy so please keep it simple.

YYou might not like the app. You might find iMovie is enough for what you need to do.

Right, I thought you meant that the laptop might not be able to handle it or something and to test the trial first.

I've used both at college quite a bit and find FCP the much better program, not a huge fan of iMovie but even that is a huge step up to what I'm using at the moment. However I will try the trial for a month and see how regular use fares for me, but I think I'll definitely end up buying the program eventually. 🙂

I finally figured out what was wrong and I think I should post it here for others' benefit. It took forever, and cost me dearly in terms of time, stress and productivity.

I have 32GB or RAM in my iMac. One or more of the sticks must have been bad and was causing intermittent problems in FCPX (and possibly in Compressor, also).

RAM is not something I think about at all because our IT people only use Apple-spec RAM when they order our video production and graphics design machines. It's a long-standing policy based on their decades of experience putting third party RAM in thousands of PCs and laptops. They use cheap RAM where they think they can get away with it; they use expensive Apple RAM where it makes no sense to scrimp because hunting down and killing weird RAM issues just is too expensive.

I do not know if this was related to your issue at all. However, the OP came back a few months after they stopped posting telcos the thread with a story about their solution, hoping their experience would help others.
