iOS 8.2 Issue: USB audio no longer working

Hi everyone,

My wife has an iPhone 6 Plus and I have an iPhone 6 and we are both experiencing it, so it's not isolated to a specific phone or phone model. Bluetooth audio is unaffected; the issue is only present when using the Lightning USB cable (yes it's Apple branded) to connect to any of my vehicles. All of the vehicles were working the night before I applied the iOS 8.2 update, but now show "No Data". The phone is charging when it's connected so the port is working and I've tried several different cables to make sure that wasn't the problem. Two of the vehicles are Honda and the third is a BMW so the issue is not related to specific firmware since those radios are made by completely separate manufacturers.

And before it's the first suggestion, wiping my phone back to factory settings is not an option. I have too many things like RSA soft tokens and proprietary app data that isn't able to be backed up due to security concerns, so losing this data is not something I will do voluntarily. Even if that were to work, it is definitely an issue that it has to be done in the first place; I expect an update to not require a factory reset before the device works properly.

I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue? Any and all ideas on how to fix this are certainly welcome.

Thanks!

-David

Yes this fixed my issue as well... I had no music in the Apple Music app, once I downloaded a track and now I can use other audio apps including the Apple Podcasts app and Spotify and now control them with my Pioneer CD player in my car... obviously its an odd situation that Apple didn't account for having no music in the Music App...

Silly indeed, especially since it had been fine before. This worked for me too (Honda) -- thanks so much! Oddly, I could swear I had already tried that under 8.2 without success, so either it got marginally better in 8.3 or maybe I didn't follow the same steps. But I will confirm that having (in my case) a 4-second audio file of silence in the Music app seems to allow things to "kick off" properly, so that swiching over to my podcast app eventually works!

Follow-up to my Apr 17 post (iPhone6, connecting via USB, 2010 Honda Civic, no Bluetooth; I'm now on iOS 9.2)

Alderu's solution of putting a single "song" still works (I put a one-second quiet voice clip, so I don't have to listen to the same song every time my podcast ends or messes up). But, it does not work consistently.

I often have to go to the phone and manually select the podcast I want to listen to (it's usually pre-downloaded). Sometimes, it resumes where I left off, but not always. Hitting "Next" doesn't always bring me to the next podcast, and sometimes it falls back to my one "song", and I have to start again.

I also frequently get the "Unsupported" message, and I have to disconnect, reconnect, sometimes restart the car, sometimes restart the whole phone! I have tried connecting the phone before I start the car, after, while on Aux, while on Radio, nothing seems to work consistently.

Also, the podcast no longer pauses when I switch to radio (which I do, sometimes, to listen to traffic reports). Fortunately, I can just tell Siri "Pause", and she helpfully complies, but it's still a pain. When I return to Aux from Radio, the podcast automatically resumes.

I can't believe Apple still hasn't resolved this issue, or even acknowledged it!

Side question to the hive: Has anyone had any luck with a third-party radio? I've been toying with the idea of replacing my OEM radio with something from BestBuy - perhaps a nice Pioneer, or even an Alpine - which supports Bluetooth.
