App Store updates broken

I cannot update certain software. Safari 8.0.4 is an example. The progress bar flashes quickly then nothing else happens. The update never goes though. In the past when this has happened I have downloaded a stand alone installer. Safari 8.0.4 is unavailable.

I've tried removing caches and temp files associated with the store to no avail.

any ideas?

ps iPhoto update worked fine

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Select

/var/log install.log

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen. The contents of the log will appear on the right. Each log message begins with a timestamp. Select the messages from the time of the last installation or update attempt. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again. Select the new messages that appear. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

☞ If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

☞ Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. You may need to use a text editor with search and replace, such as TextEdit.

Thanks!

this dump is the result of pushing the update button. there was a huge dump after moving to the updates section from the featured section in App Store.

by the way...repairing permissions has never helped this problem either.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/var/folders/zz

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

I have a similar problem but with updating Command Line Tools (OS X 10.10) for Xcode 7.0 on OSX 10.10.5.

This is on my corporate computer where IT has turned on all sorts of security restrictions which may be causing this. I'm going to go to see them about this. (I should be allowed to do this since programming is in my job description...)

Many thanks in advance for helping with this.

Also being reported on StackOverflow:

I will say that this failure to send error messages up the chain is distressing to me.

I've come to expect this from Windows (And I HATE Outlook for this!), but not the MacIntosh, although maybe more of a Unix-type of problem.

For others finding this discussion:

The instructions I posted here seven months ago applied to Yosemite, and are not suitable for El Capitan. If you're running El Capitan, followed those instructions, and now can't empty the Trash, the easiest way to recover is to start up from an external storage device on which OS X has been installed. You'll then be able to empty the Trash. If you use FileVault, you must first mount the internal drive in Disk Utility.

An extra boot volume is useful to have anyway. You can use an inexpensive USB flash drive of at least 16 GB capacity. To install OS X on the device, follow these instructions:

How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support

Alternatively, restore from the backup you made before moving the folder to the Trash. If you backed up with Time Machine, see below:

OS X El Capitan: Recover your entire system
