App Store updates broken

I cannot update certain software. Safari 8.0.4 is an example. The progress bar flashes quickly then nothing else happens. The update never goes though. In the past when this has happened I have downloaded a stand alone installer. Safari 8.0.4 is unavailable.

I've tried removing caches and temp files associated with the store to no avail.

any ideas?

ps iPhoto update worked fine

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/var/folders/zz

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

For others finding this discussion:

The instructions I posted here seven months ago applied to Yosemite, and are not suitable for El Capitan. If you're running El Capitan, followed those instructions, and now can't empty the Trash, the easiest way to recover is to start up from an external storage device on which OS X has been installed. You'll then be able to empty the Trash. If you use FileVault, you must first mount the internal drive in Disk Utility.

An extra boot volume is useful to have anyway. You can use an inexpensive USB flash drive of at least 16 GB capacity. To install OS X on the device, follow these instructions:

How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support

Alternatively, restore from the backup you made before moving the folder to the Trash. If you backed up with Time Machine, see below:

OS X El Capitan: Recover your entire system

If I boot from an external drive, the Trashed files don't appear in the trash, but they're back when I reboot from the main drive. Now I can't even move them from the trash to another folder.

Yes, the internal drive is fully accessible when booting from the external drive. I even tried copying that same folder again to the trash, and I was able to both do so and delete it when booted from the external (the trash was then completely empty), but when I rebooted the internal, that same folder was still there. The ultimate problem is the folder

PKInstallSandboxManager-SystemSoftware

which I cannot move, delete, open, or change permissions on.

Maybe this is related: I run Yosemite 10.5 on my servers, with Server.app 5.0.15. However the AppStore Update always offers an "update" to Server.app 2.2.5. I looked through the receipts, but there is only a single receipt for Server.app. Any hint where there might be any false information hidden? Strangely this behavior happened even after a 100% fresh install on a brand-new machine. The sequence then was (1) install Yosemite, (2) install Server.app 4.x , (3) check for updates => AppStore: "you need Server 2.2.5". But that version will not even install on Yosemite (rightfully).

Any hint how to clear that nuisance? Thanks in advance

Be very careful with these instructions. I tried them on El Capitan and now my iMac won't reboot.

Those instructions were posted for someone else more than a year ago, and they're unsuitable for El Capitan. If you need help with a problem of your own, I suggest you start your own thread. You'll have the same chance as anyone else of getting a useful reponse.

This is a public forum, so anybody can read these instructions and might try them: that's the whole point of using a public discussion board. If the solution is wrong, or in this case dangerous given that most people are now on a new OS version, I thought it was a good idea to post a warning about it to avoid that other people end up with a non functional system. No reason to get all defensive about it.
