@funchrist doesn't have a clue. Charge it overnight. It is designed to be charged overnight. And it guarantees that it will be fully charged for the next day. Or don't; it doesn't really matter, as @stedman1 says. However there is no benefit to charging it to less than 100%, and no benefit to not letting it go to zero, other than not being able to use the phone if it does. Neither action will shorten the life of the battery.

Let me give you some assistance in evaluating the answers in this thread. Look under the user names of everyone who has answered you. You'll see a level number and a points total. Those points have been awarded by fellow users who believe answers to be helpful and useful. While points/level are not a fool proof guide, if you have three people each with over 25, 000 points telling you one thing and one person with 5 points telling you something different, which answer do you think is more likely to be correct?

People overthink lithium ion batteries. Charge them when you need to and don't worry too much about them. Avoid the "battery saver" apps in the App Store. At best, they do nothing useful, at worst, they give you incorrect or misleading information.

Here are Apple's instructons on getting the most out of your battery:

Best of luck.

And you've been told by an actual engineer, who has done the experimenet, that it won't hurt anything. The internet is also full of sites that tell you aliens are running the government.

I agree; overcharging a battery is bad. However, it is IMPOSSIBLE to overcharge any Apple battery powered device no matter how long it is left plugged in, because the charger is in the device, not in the external power source, and it stops charging when the battery is full. Even if you leave it plugged in.

You can demonstrate this yourself; get a USB power meter (http://smile.amazon.com/Centech-USB-Power-Meter/dp/B00DAR4ITE/ref=sr_1_3?s=elect ronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1429620914&sr=1-3&keywords=usb+power+meter for example). Plug it into the Apple USB adapter. Plug the phone cable into it, then into the phone. Read the power meter at the start, and when the phone reaches 100%. You will see that the current into the phone goes to ZERO, meaning it is not charging at all. Yes, I've done this. And a lot of other interesting measurements.
