Lost an item in iCloud

While composing a paper for a talk, I was interrupted by the requirement that Pages now be in iCloud. I "saved" the paper, but could not find it anywhere. I had to rush to rewrite an earlier draft saved to my desk top. When I go to iCloud, I don't find it. I am not Apple Applications savvy. How do I manage iCloud? Are there a number of things to do? I don't have any other device - not even a cell phone - so it is just for my iMac.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Clearly you need to leave Mail on as you are using an iCloud account, you must decide which services other than that are required, turn off all that are not. Before you turn iCloud Drive off copy the content to your local drive (Documents), if presented with any choice of wether or not to delete data, take the opposite (Save data) road.

I can't do this right away but will do so as soon as possible.

Also, from this information I can get my friend to help if there is a problem further down the line. He put me on the cloud and can help get me off where needed.

As I said, I have had no other problems but still should probably get out from under where possible.

Thank you, again, for your help and patience (well, not quite always that). I am grateful that at my great age I can use a computer in so very many helpful ways. But the age does sometimes make for slow thinking and acting.

Oh, dear, that is another story. I am not clear about that, either. I do try to back up my checking and banking information but when I go to look to see that it has done so, there is a long list of backups and I don't know whether it is the top or bottom one that is the most recent. In past times, if I pulled up a checking account record it would corrupt my current account so I just don't go there.

Must go to supper now.

Then you are not backing up, and you should be, regardless of clouds and their ilk computers go wrong, drives die, people make errors. Without backup they tend to be serious errors.

You need 1 external hard drive (USB) then you'll plug it in to your Mac, turn Time Machine on and you won't be losing any data after that. You can toss the Mac into the retirement home water feature if you want, your data will be safe. 😁
