Is iPhoto deleted by the 10.10.3 update ?

Ok, we now have the Photo app, to replace iPhoto.

But does the update actually delete iPhoto from the Mac ?

I have used iPhoto Library Manager from Fact Cat Software to split my pics archives into several iPhoto Library ( one per year basically ).

I do not want to lose easy access to my old pics if iPhoto is removed. (or assume that iPLM will be updated )

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

No. But when you go to convert your iPhoto Library over to Photos I would duplicate the library, rename it PHOTOS.iphotolibrary and have Photos convert that one. This way you'll still be able to use iPhoto and you iPhoto Library until you're convinced you want to completely go over to Photos.

I'm afraid not...at least not for some of us. I stupidly clicked on the option to upgrade to 10.10.3 and did not look at the details - that I would be adding the Photos app - and when the computer relaunched iPhoto was gone, totally. I understand this is not an issue for everyone but it is for me. I happily read post earlier from Todd "right-click on iPhoto and click Show package contents, then go in to Contents, and in to the MacOS folder and double click the iPhoto app from there... it launches just fine!" - apparently for some iPhoto remains present but his hidden. But for me it is not there, there is no "MacOS" folder within the Contents folder.

Anyway I'm backed up in multiple ways but now with no way to actually run iPhoto on my main iMac. Fortunately, I did not update by MBP so I'm now in the 8 hour process of copying my iPhoto library (the most up to date one which also serves as Photos library apparently) to an external 2 TB drive so I can use iPhoto on the MBP until they (hopefully) fix it.

The inability to see Events is my main issue - and no, Albums don't do the same thing - my workflow has centered on Events as they are added to the library and processed with the addition of keywords, sorted into albums from which I then delete similar pictures, picking the best ones for later use as slideshows. Along the way, I rated pictures as 3 star for in album and 5 star for the best ones. Ratings are gone too, converted into a keyword which works but is awkward. As another poster noted Photos seems like a big shoebox of pictures. Everything is there and (thank goodness) keywords are intact but a huge amount of the functionality of iPhoto is gone.

I am hoping that as they did with Final Cut Pro X that Apple will add back in functionality with an update and hope to continue to use iPhoto until then (though apparently I won't be able to do so on my main desktop). This is all very un-Apple like.

Robert:

iPhoto was removed only from the Dock and is still in the Applications folder. If you don't have iPhoto 9.6.1 then you will have to get it from the App Store by following the directions posted by Terence Devlin in this post:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File âž™ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Hi Old Toad,

I assumed that it was just gone from the dock initially as well - but a thorough search of my iMac's Applications folder, spotlight search, etc. revealed iPhoto is totally gone from that machine. Apparently, I'm not alone in this but it is not very common. I had a backup of course and I am actually running iPhoto on my Macbook Pro for the time being from an external 2 TB hard drive with the plan to get everything all ready for the big migration to Photos at some point in the next few months so it is not a big deal or I would seek out downloading it from the app store, etc. as has been recommended.

I like the idea of simulating events as you outlined, I may well do that once I've made the switch.

Now that you are familiar with it, do you think Photos is a step forward or backward? Just curious. Thanks for all your help over the years!

Although it has some more advanced editing features I believe it a step back as far as image management is concerned. I feel Apple is more concerned with syncing photos between multiple devices than managing photos.

That was my impression as well during my forced try-out of Photos. I hope that Apple will act in similar fashion to their approach with Final Cut Pro - adding more features / adding back functionality which is currently missing. Perhaps that will even happen before I make the big migration! Thanks again.
