My iPhone 5 starting burning through the battery and heating up tonight during a meeting, went from 43% to 26% in about half an hour!!

I did a Reset settings, and also finally remembered about turning off Handoff (General > Handoff & Suggested Apps), also turned off Location Services (Privacy > Location Services), turned off a lot of the Notifications, and turned off Background App Refresh (General > Background App Refresh).

The rampant battery drain seems to have stopped, and the iPhone is cooler to the touch. We'll see how it goes.

This article has a great way to test battery drain:

http://www.scottyloveless.com/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-batter y-drain

"How to Test Your iOS Battery Drain

There is a quick and easy battery life test built into your device, if you do a little bit of math — the Usage and Standby times. Head on over to Settings > General > Usage and check out your times.

Your Usage time is how long you have actually used your device, and the Standby time is how long your device has been dormant in-between the times you've used it plus your Usage time. A better name for Standby time would be "Total Time since unplugged." The key to look for is that your Usage time should be significantly lower than your Standby time, unless you have been using your device every single second you've had it unplugged. If this is not the case and your Usage time is exactly equal to your Standby time, you have a severe problem. The bottom line is that your Usage time should be accurate to how much you've used it since you took it off the charger.

So here's the test: write down your usage and standby time, press the sleep/wake button (or lock button, as some call it) to put the device to sleep, and set the device down for five minutes. When you come back, take note of the change in time. If your device is sleeping properly, then the Standby time should have increased by five minutes and your Usage time by <1 minute . If your Usage time rises by more than one minute, you have a drain problem. Something is keeping your device from sleeping properly, significantly shortening the time it will last."

Using this, my iPhone 4S was showing constant usage while sitting idle on my desk in sleep mode with no Mail Push/Background App Refresh enabled. I was able to see that switching off Location Services didn't improve things, but that switching off Cell Data while indoors (step #8) has decreased battery drain. The phone is dropping only 3%/hr while idle, as opposed to >10%/hr.

Hope this helps!

I Would hold off if you have a large photo library that has been migrated to photos on iCloud. I moved 56k photos from aperture thru the upgrade process and i am seeing my phone burn thru a full charge in 45 minutes and the photos app under battery usage is 71% and over 7 days averaging 45%.

i have tried nearly everything recommend for resolution and non have worked. I cannot find any method of shutting the photos app off, it keeps running even after you sign out of iCloud.

i also have found my phone getting so hot I get the message telling me that it needs to be cooled before I can access anything.

DIagnostic logs are being generated every few minutes, currently I have 20+ pages of logs.

I don't understand what it is you all do on your phones all day...or what kind of settings you guys have but after I updated to 8.3 I'm getting BETTER battery life. Here's what I'm looking at after a full day of constant use (it only says 3G because i was driving through a forested area where LTE was unavailable; my LTE is *not* turned off).
