GMAIL Accounts unusable after 8.3 update!

I have lost access to my GMAIL accounts after upgrading to IOS 8.3 !

IOS Settings does not provide me a way to enter a new application password for the account - there is NO PASSWORD box displayed anywhere in the GMAIL configuration. So I tried deleting the account and re-adding it but i get stuck in an endless loop of two-step confirmation and it "appears" to add the account (prompts me for which features - mail, notes, calendar, etc.) but then when all is said and done NO GMAIL ACCOUNT shows up in my list of accounts. WTH?

And trying to navigate Apple's support screens has become an exercise in frustration and futility!

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this mess?

I also had experienced this issue. You need to power off the iPad or iPhone.

To Power off this is to hold the On/Off button and slide the power off. Wait for a couple of seconds when it's done loading.

Another way is to remove your Email account from settings and add it back on settings.

i have been running iOS 8.3 on my i phone 6 and on my wife's 6+ for months and no problem using the Gmail app

as of yesterday evening ( Aug 18, 2015 ) on my iPhone 6 when i attempt to use the gmail app

the emails load and after a few seconds disappear

leaving me with a blanc screen

also sometimes the emails do not even load at all

i've have 5 gmail accounts that i use with the app

and i have the identical problem with all of them

( one of them is my wife's gmail account which is not experiencing any problem on her iPhone 6+ )

my wife's iPhone 6+ is NOT experiencing this problem at all

both phones have the Apple Mail app set up

but we only actually use the Gmail app

i've tried powering off and then on a number of times and that has not helped

i've tried with wifi and only cellular data and that does not

i've tried with cellular data and no wifi and that does not help

gmail is working fine with Safari on my iMac27 and 13" MacbookAir

any help with this would be extremely welcome

i phoned to Apple Support they looked at it and said it was a Gmail ( google ) problem

and gave me this Google Tech Support phone # 1-855-550-2552

i phoned Google and they wanted $50 to reconfigure my 5 email address in the app.

so i argued that i saw no reason that they had to be reconfigured

and instead of paying them

.......i deleted the gmail app from my iPhone 6

and reinstalled it .....and everything works fine again.

I had the same problem where I was unable to add any Gmail accounts to the Mail app. In Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account, after inputting my login information and accepting the access agreement, I was bounced back to Add Account only to find that my account hadn't been added.

Before I found a workable solution, I tried the following with no success:

For my Google accounts I:

  1. Tried both disabling and enabling 2-step verification.
  2. Did the captcha unlock.
  3. Enabled low-security devices.

On my iPhone I:

  1. Installed the Gmail app temporarily and was able to access my email there.
  2. Went to my web browser and accessed my email there.
  3. Went back to Google account settings and did all of the above from my mobile browser.

But after all of the above, I still couldn't add Gmail accounts to Mail over wifi.

WHAT DID WORK: I turned off wifi and was able to add 3 Gmail accounts using cellular data.

HOWEVER, then I got a new problem! When I turned wifi back on, none of my Gmail accounts could sync with the mail server. (My non-Gmail account remained unaffected through all of the above.)

WHAT WORKED #2: I switched to another wifi network. Currently, my Gmail accounts work under 1 open (no-password) network and 1 password-protected network and not under the original password-protected network. I have no idea why and at this point don't care to invest more time to find out.

I finally managed to make it work.

To do it : make sure that you are on wifi , and that you have the DNS set to google one : 8.8.8.8.

Put the iphone/ipad in airplane mode then enable wifi.

Start mail , refresh gmail account. It should prompt you to reenter the password ( it will point you to google .... ) .

Bad Apple , bad lookupd ; it seems that mail trying to contact imap.gmail.com makes lookupd think that the wifi link is not operational and switches to cellular .

For iPhone and Ipad Users on the Mail App:

You don't have to always delete account. This is part of the Google / Apple War. Google (somewhat) recently started requiring you to authorize "less secure apps" like "The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with iOS 6 or below".

Info is here:

Allowing less secure apps to access your account:

https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en

And then scroll for the link to "Change account access for less secure apps". If you authorize YES then you should get the PW pop-up again on your iphone or ipad.

A bit annoying as Google mentions "iOS6 and below" so they haven't bothered to update the policy in a while. They are just trying to say they are more secure than Apple.

Thank you so much for this answer. It makes sense and it worked for me. Worth to note that I never saw a password box though. It just started working after I did the "allow less secure apps" in the gmail settings on the page you mention. Kudos!

BTW, what was most aggravating to me was that the email would not sync, but it was all silent. No error, no warning, nothing. Mail sent showed up as "sent", but in fact wasn't going anywhere. My son (not an prolific email user, to say the least) had sent, with great effort, his uncle a thank you note for a recent gift, and there was no response. After a few days, I was a bit surprised and that's how we found out that the mail was stuck with no other symptoms. Awesome user experience, simply wonderful. We are getting closer and closer to Brazil (the movie) every day.
