Music app crashes with IOS 8.3 after playing two songs

I just submitted this bug report to Apple:

I have a auto update smart playlist based on zero rated tracks with an album rating of 3 stars or higher. I play this playlist on random and rate the tracks as I listen to them. Since updating to iOS 8.3 the music app will play two tracks (which I have rated during the play) and upon the completion of the second track will crash or close out and return me to the iOS home screen. This is repeatable. I have music matched switched off and the playlist is freshly updated from WiFi update from my Mac.

Has anyone else experience something similar where the music app will close repeatedly after only playing a couple of songs?

iPhone 5, iOS 8.3

Here's my experience. I had a recently played smart playlist that would auto update itself. After upgrading to 8.3, the moment I chose that playlist, the music app would exit and I could no longer start it. It would instantly crash every time. I also use Itunes Match. I went to my computer, deleted the recently played smart playlist, then recreated it. Problem solved. Cannot repro any more crashes. Using iPhone 6.

Having the same issue: After updating to IOS 8.3 my iPhone 6 plus; when playing any playlist the music app crashes after the second song. Also, skipping songs in playlist will cause a crash. Restored to backup: did not work. Restored to factory settings: did not work. Deleted all backups and started anew: did not work. Called Apple support with problem: they suggested all of the solutions I had tried that did not work then suggested it was a hardware problem. Made appointment with Genius Bar: exchanged for brand new iPhone 6 plus: did not work.

As with most everyone else with this problem I can shuffle through "artists" or "albums" or "songs" but not playlists. Have not tried checking or unchecking "limits" in playlists.

Please fix this Apple.

I've had this problem for a while too - since upgrading to iOS 8.3 on my iPhone 6 - it was ok on iOS 8.2.

I have quite a lot of music, quite a few smart playlists. I have iTunes Match and don't have the music stored on my iPhone.

It seems to only affect my Smart Playlists, and then not all of them - just the more complex ones (of mine at least), maybe just the ones that need to update the list of tracks after every play, though I haven't proven that theory yet....

Unchecking 'limit to' helped so it didn't fail so often, but didn't fix it completely...

I've just been on a long chat session with Apple support and the guy has replicated it on his device and we've got diagnostics off of both our devices, so hopefully they can fix this one soon.....

I have stumbled onto the cause of the problem and the solution to Smart Playlists causing iPhone etc to crash. Where it has Limit to XX items selected by XXX, DO NOT CHOOSE RANDOM. Choose highest rating or most often played instead and try it out. Since I have discovered this I have created many Smart Playlists that work successfully with iTunes Match and my iPhone and iPad never crash. You can create a pretty sophisticated nested Smart Playlist and as long as you choose one of the options other than RANDOM you are golden. Hope this helps many frustrated folks out there.

I have deleted all my smart playlists and created a new one which works fine and hasn't crashed once.

Tick in Match all of the following rules

Media Kind is Music

Plays is 0

Genre is not "Christmas" (I have a list of Christmas songs for the kids 🙂)

Genre is not "no iPod" (I have songs which I don't want on my iPhone ever)

Tick in Limit to 2000 items selected by lowest rating

Match only ticked items IS NOT ticked

Live updating is ticked

Hope this helps.

Another solution I've seen to this is to have a smart playlist pull the song selection from another playlist. In my case, it's another smart playlist. The playlist that pulls from the other can be set to select a random number of items, and the crashing does not occur.

My particular use scenario is I have a playlist that has all songs of a certain rating from different genres that I enjoy listening together, and then a second smart playlist that pulls 100 songs from the first playlist as long as they have not been played in the last 2 weeks. Only the second playlist is synced to my phone. This means that when I play a song, the smart playlist does not update on my phone, and any played songs stay on the playlist until I sync it at home, which then it funnels through the playlists correctly and updates what songs are on my phone.

So the issue seems to be with random selection on a smart playlist that can actually update. This and some other selections in the thread are workarounds, but hopefully Apple fixes this in 8.4.
