Alternative to new Photos app for Mac?

I just upgraded, or got upgraded, and cannot stand the new Photos and its facial-recognition feature (and mostly, the apparent inability to turn it off). Now when I open Photos, I see my dead parents, my ex and all I want to see is .. not them. I think it's time to move away from Photos. Any decent alternatives? Google searches don't show much that is current. Thanks.

I have been trying to back up my Photos to a separate external hard drive by dragging and dropping the 5000 pictures I have.

When you drag a photo from the Photos library you are getting the preview version that Photos creates when the photo is first imported into the library.

If you want to get the original files then export the selected photos via the File ➙ Export ➙ Export Unmodified Original for XXXX Photos... menu option.

User uploaded file

Doing it that way you can choose to export to folders that are named the same as the Moments, ie. by date and location.

Humm

For the first time, I have sought non-Apple software to perform major functions

Seems really clear and extremely hard to miss[sic]-read

If you loved iPhoto and hate Photos then clearly it is a user problem - Photos is new and different and has a learning curve as does any new software (and as will any software you move to) but if you bother to learn it is better in nearly every way that iPhoto and is as easy or easier to use - it does require new work flows (again as will any replacement software you move to)

Maybe these links will assist you in learning how to use Photos and how it differs from iPhoto - Links to User tips re migrating from iPhoto to Photos

I am done too.

Can't even access to my own content !!
I want to go to my raw file, and modify them as I want.
Not be jailed in a shady program such as photo, a program who hide my sources behind a "all-over-the-place-social-sharing-tagging-gps-swissknife" crappy app.

If I do photo or video I just want to have access to them.

Simple no ?

Is that not was apple use to be all about ?

Simplicity ?

I just waiting than the PC cames up with a better OS and I move out and get rid of all those "app(y)" crap pieces of design.

To much BS in apple those days, and it's feel like it's just the beginning of the road.
I can't wait the day when we gonna have to pay to access to our own content and files.

An ex mac lover and professional user / designer.

Your post is total ignorance and completely inaccurate

first off Photos is totally optional so you can use any software you want

second there is nothing at all keeping you from using Photos and having access to your RAW images to do with as you please - you simply can not use the same copy of the RAW photo both for Photos and for other software since Photos used lossless processing (a great advantage) and that required that the original remain totally unmodified in any way - to use it as you please simply do not import to Photos or if you want it both in Photoa and outside then export the unmodified original and it is yours to do which anything you please

And given your inability to use simple software I feel extremely sorry for anyone who mistakenly hires you to do any design

Dear Larry I see you take any remark to your brand very seriously 😉

When I talking about raw, I mean by that any original files, it can be whatever file, I just want to have direct access to my file that's it.
And if you like program who do un necessary copy of your data on your drive, and by the same way waste memory space, go for it !
Also have to using hidden hot key combinaison to do a simple task such as having access to your file is also silly.

For the rest I use adobe suite for my professional works, and it's been ages than I also left final cut X for the same stupid reason.

Let's agree to disagree 😉

Enjoy your world I keep mine.

I have no brand - but I really dislike ignorance

Simple solution use software that works that way - when you choose to use software that works another way then you have to work the way of the software you chose to use That is not how Photos works and therefore you simply chose to use the wrong software for your desires - nothing Photos does is unnecessary nor is it wasting memory space (or even disk space)

Just because you prefer a differnt work flow does not make Photos' better work flow "shady" - it simply means that you want to work a different way and that you do not understand the extreme advantafges of Photos (and iPhoto and Aperture and LightRoom, etc, etc) advanced way of doing things - you prefer an old fashioned destructive work flow and that is your choice - just do it anyway you please

I sooooo totally agree with everything you have said. Apple seems to be losing it. It used to be user friendly and efficient. Now it is worse than Microsoft! I too am waiting for another company to emerge. Each update and release seems to make it worse and worse. I remember when I first came to Apple back when they were on OS Tiger. That was a fantastic OS. I wish I could go back to that OS!!!

Let me know if you find anything worthy! I'm sure there are millions of people out there ready for real CHANGE eager and waiting!

Thanks.

Sorry LarryHN but Photos is simply terrible. It is completely counter intuitive. This was not the case with iPhotos.

I have been trying to back up my Photos to a separate external hard drive by dragging and dropping the 5000 pictures I have. It's been over 6 hours now and the pictures are still only around 2/3rds complete.

This has never happened before. In the past, the drag and drop of 5000 pictures took a few minutes.

Things are not going well for Apple. The software is becoming increasingly complex and clunky. This was the exact reason that I came to Apple in 2004 when I was using Microsoft. At that time Apple was clean and crisp. Everything just worked and worked intuitively. I was so impressed.

I hope Apple figures out some of the basics soon because I'm not a lone voice singing in the dark. There are many who believe Apple products have simply lost the primal ideology that made them so successful- intuitiveness and clarity.

I highly doubt you were copying that many full sized files in that period of time.

Thumbnails or scaled down versions maybe. File transfers are independent of the app being used to organize them. The Photos app sends commands to the file system for execution.

iPhoto contained no secret sauce "in the past" that made it transfer files faster than Photos does now.

I have a strong feeling you may be doing your backup incorrectly. If you want to backup the photos in the Photos app, you simple have to copy the Photos library file to your external drive.

If you have individual images in Finder, then simply copying and pasting 5000 image files from Finder to your hard drive should only take half and hour or so (depending on the file size).

If you're dragging and dropping the images out of Photos and into Finder on your hard drive, that is the incorrect way to go about it and it won't work. What you should do is Export the files from photos to your hard drive... That shouldn't take much time at all.
