I just upgraded, or got upgraded, and cannot stand the new Photos and its facial-recognition feature (and mostly, the apparent inability to turn it off). Now when I open Photos, I see my dead parents, my ex and all I want to see is .. not them. I think it's time to move away from Photos. Any decent alternatives? Google searches don't show much that is current. Thanks.

I am in complete agreement with your observations re Photo and your opinions re Apple. I have used Apple computers for 30 years and have been a proud supporter of Apple products until the last three years. I think security and social accommodations have influenced changes in the software that have seriously degraded it. For the first time, I have sought non-Apple software to perform major functions that I had previously relied upon Apple to provide.
Maybe go back to Windows? Photos has been around for a while now and millions seem to be coping just fine. There are also many alternative programs if you do a simple search. Apple are not here, so complaining and demeaning them will do no good here and is against the Terms Of Use you agreed to when you joined these Forums.

If you've just sought non-Apple software for the first time in 30 years then your need must have been pretty basic.
I never like Windows although I've used it if required for a contract. I have 63 years programming computers in over 20 languages. When Apple appeared, I found their products were the best ever, and have invested in Apple for years. I do not demean them when I point out problems and .possible improvements.
Photos works fine on my iPad but fails on my MacBook. It continually puts the wrong thumbnails with some photos and adds file which are duplicates. I've tried correcting these and have rebuilt the library several times. but the same problems reappear. I've had no problems with iPhoto and prefer its features. I've also tried Google Photos, but found it includes my photos without any dated prior to year 1900.
I hope this problem can be addressed by some knowledgeable person.
Delete those photos from your library. You can try Lightroom if you wish. I had Facial Recognition in iPhoto, so it's not new.

Somehow I seemed to have disabled it - or removed certain faces - in the past, I don't recall. This is really distressing!
Why do you keep photos on your Mac that distress you? Move them to an external drive.

You miss-read me. I said I am replacing Apple software! I have used many non-Apple applications for 61 years on many different computers and prefer Apple to all others.
