New Photos library doesn't show in iTunes for iPad sync.

After installing 10.10.3 and migrating my iPhoto library to Photos, it doesn't show in iTunes when I want to sync my iPad Air. It only shows folder sync option. I have tried creating new libraries from scratch as well as the migrated ones, preferences deletes, restarts, nothing helps. All my software is up to date, I use a late 2010 27" iMac.

Now, I have found a temp solution: Photos changes iPhoto's library extension from .photolibrary to .migratedphotolibrary. I changed that back, then deleted the often problematic AlbumData.xml from iPhoto library package and it shows in iTunes like before. But no similar fix for Photos libraries works. Any ideas?

I had exactly the same problem: an using the latest iTunes, and if I choose 'Sync Photos' to any of my iOS devices, I can only choose to 'Copy photos from: <folder name>' - where the folder name is either my Pictures folder, or anything else within it (but no Photo library).

None of the Apple websites are updated yet, but after a reboot, the 'Copy photos from:' finally offered 'Photos' and also 'Choose folder...'

Disaster averted, but iPhoto won't be supported anymore, by the looks of it (and if you open iPhoto, it gets out of sync).

Looks like Apple should have provided some guidance here!

Got it! I had the same problem, called Applecare, and now it's fixed. The advisor had me do these steps:

1) Quit iTunes

2) Open iPhoto (yep, iPhoto—it's still on your hard drive)

3) Skip the option to create thumbnails, and simply let the photos load

4) Quit iPhoto — a speedy progress bar will show updating all those photos

5) Open iTunes

6) The options to sync from Photos and iPhoto appear in the drop-down menu

Hope this works for you.

Hi,

Thanks for that tip and I got as far as that as well with Apple Support but for me the subsequent syncing doesn't work.

I have just returned from another visit at the Apple Store where their top level Genius (if such a thing exists) wanted to see it for himself. Rather worryingly, neither he nor Apple head office has an answer for why this isn't working.

To summarise, I connect my iPhone 6 (all up to date) with my MBA/iTunes via USB cable. The sync tab under the iPhone allows me to sync my photos via USB and I get a dropdown menu to chose from iPhoto or Photos Sync. Both libraries in same location but iPhoto works, but Photos says there are 0 pictures and won't sync...

The Apple genius was going to try it himself tonight at home. He has my number and has promised to phone. In the meantime my question remains. For those of you who do not use the Cloud for storing pictures could you please confirm the sync is working for you as described above. Thanks

Thank you for this process, it got me part of the way there. I have iPhoto as an option now in the drop down menu, but not Photos. I'm hoping this will work well enough to be able to sync my wife's pictures to her phone properly. Apple still needs to address the issue though as this is only a partial workaround, not a solution.

Thanks again for the detailed post, I appreciate it!

Hi outlawgal,

Managed to get it sorted today and have informed Apple. Problem was that I had to tell my Photos OSX app to use the new migrated library as "System Library" in order to let it show up in iTunes. Then I had to switch on the use of the Cloud in System Preferences, let it sync to later de-select it again. This somehow triggered Photos App to read my library content and to sync it with my iPhone. Hooray...I was contacted today by Apple and have informed them about this fix. Genius also phoned me back and has confirmed it worked for him too.

Thanks for the replies and your time.
