New Photos library doesn't show in iTunes for iPad sync.

After installing 10.10.3 and migrating my iPhoto library to Photos, it doesn't show in iTunes when I want to sync my iPad Air. It only shows folder sync option. I have tried creating new libraries from scratch as well as the migrated ones, preferences deletes, restarts, nothing helps. All my software is up to date, I use a late 2010 27" iMac.

Now, I have found a temp solution: Photos changes iPhoto's library extension from .photolibrary to .migratedphotolibrary. I changed that back, then deleted the often problematic AlbumData.xml from iPhoto library package and it shows in iTunes like before. But no similar fix for Photos libraries works. Any ideas?

Ok you get 5gb of free space for backups. (Plus icloud email and other stuff).

But many people like myself use Gmail for email so that doesn't take up space.

So I use those 5gb for iPhone backups. In terms of pictures, iphone-icloud backups include only pictures/videos from your iPhone. This takes up a lot of space eventually. So I have a weekly routine:

1). Every Saturday I connect my iPhone to my laptop with an ehd and use Mac Photos app to import my Camera Roll photos. I delete the videos and pictures from my device (checkable option). This does 2 things for me: (a) It removes the bulky pictures and videos from my iPhone which frees up space from my 5gb backup. (b). Since I backup up to my ehd, it doesn't take up space on my laptop either.

2). Then I open up iTunes and sync to it. My iTunes is set up such that it copies my photos to my phone. This means I have my pictures available to me back on my iPhone, but in album instead of the camera roll.

If I wanted my videos on my phone I guess I could also set up my iTunes sync to sync back videos as well. I don't because that would take up a lot of my iPhone space.

Grr ... I just restored my iPhone 5 from a backup, and now when I go to the Photos pane in the iTunes sync window, I only have the option to sync pictures from iPhoto. If I open up that list, the only other option that appears is Choose folder ... Pictures. And after a couple of weeks of syncing and resyncing and general messing around, I'd finally got photos to sync properly last week! (The restore from backup also erased all the photos that had already been synced to my iPhone.)

Has anyone else had this issue, where the sync with Photos option comes and goes from iTunes? I'd guess there are other more recent posts on this, but calling an app "Photos" makes searching on specific issues tough!

In my case: when I went into Photos, the "Select as System Library" option was grayed out, so I couldn't do anything with that. Then I turned the computer off and went to bed. Today I've turned on the computer, turned Photos on about a dozen times, had it crash about 10 times, and genuinely turned it off once. Now Photos is appearing in the drop-down menu when I go to the "Sync Photos" pane in the iTunes sync window. I hope the sync will now proceed properly.

So for what it's worth: if you'd been syncing photos from Photos to your iPhone/iOS device fine, but then restored from a backup and discovered your photos are gone and there's no longer an option to sync from Photos but only iPhoto, just try turning your computer off and on.
