Cannot update iPhoto 9.6 to 9.6.1 after 10.10.3 update!

This Mac came with iPhoto 9.6 preinstalled (new iMac). The OS X 10.10.3 update killed iPhoto 9.6 because it needs an update to run. Apple REMOVED the update from the App Store, so I couldn't update the application even if I wanted to prior to installing the OS X 10.3.3 update. I'm assuming that even if I delete the app from my machine, I won't be able to get to iPhoto 9.6.1 via the App Store. Currently the update button for iPhoto does absolutely nothing.

My daughter has iPhoto 9.6.1 on her machine but she downloaded that under her own Apple ID. I'm assuming that if I replace my version with hers, it won't be linked to my Apple ID since I never downloaded it. I want it associated with my Apple ID.

So what am I supposed to do in the meantime? I have no iPhoto. I do not want to use Photos. I want my iPhoto back. Is Apple going to put the iPhoto 9.6.1 update back on the App Store for all of us who got stuck between the migration? Serious oversight on their part. Assuming that everyone's machine was updated already. I mean really, the machine shipped with iPhoto 9.6. The App Store reports updates for apps separately from the system updates. You have to log in to see your app updates, you don't have to log in to see your system updates. And that my friend, is what caused this whole fiasco.

Someone please tell me they have been able to update to 9.6.1 since the OS X 10.10.3 update. Please state what you did to get it.

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

I had not tried trashing the iPhoto app altogether but I had changed its name to "iPhoto 9.6.app". UPDATE/INSTALL still didn't work.

Photos does what I need so I don't actually care whether I get iPhotos back. I had just gotten the idea the conversion to Photos would trash the iPhotos database if it hadn't been upgraded to 9.6.1 first. In fact, everything in the iPhotos database appears to be accessible from within Photos with no problems.

I've been having the same problem with OS X 10.11.0.

I trashed the iPhoto app as suggested. The icon was never in the Purchases tab. The icon is gone from the Updates tab. There are no apps hidden on my account. I cannot find the app by Searching for it either. I'm starting to wonder if it ever really existed.

Any idea how I can install the latest iPhoto app now?

I am having the exact same issue.

I updated to El Capitan, tried to update iPhoto, but couldn't as it said the update was unavailable to my account. I moved the iPhoto app into the trash can as suggested in another thread.

Now iPhoto does not show up in purchased apps, when I search the App Store there are a number of apps available but none are iPhoto.

This is a bit frustrating especially for a new user (since Sunday).

I spoke with Apple Support about this problem.

In El Capitan support for iPhotos has been dropped and the replacement app/software is Photos Version 1.2 (340.4.0).

Only if you have purchased iPhoto on an older operating system prior to upgrading to El Capitan, will iPhotos show up in purchased apps.

I spoke with the Apple support and told them it would be of great assistance if this replacement of iPhotos by Photos be made main stream knowledge within the Apple communtiy.

Thanks for the comment. I thought of this possibility after I made the posting.

I have several Macs, running different version of MacOS and am now, just a bit paranoid about loosing access to iPhoto. Photos was inadvertently installed after one of my upgrades, and I was very disappointment in its apparent short-comings. Thankfully, I was able to get iPhoto back! Let's hope Apple sees the many comments and upgrades iPhoto in the future.

Terence, I upgraded to Yosemite in June 2015. I'm now on version 10.10.5. I accepted the fact that Photos replaced my iPhoto app. However, near the end of the year as updates were appearing, iPhoto 9.6.1 appeared in the list with a release date of Mar 19, 2015, well before my Yosemite upgrade. All updates were done before my upgrade.

I get the following message when trying to do the update, "Update Unavailable with the Apple ID: This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled." I didn't have to buy the app because it was pre-installed on the computer. I've had a password change but my user ID has not changed. In never having purchased the app, it has never been hidden. So, I can't unhide and re-install iPhoto as others have. Have not sent it to trash as that didn't seem to work for another poster.

I think I'm pretty much stuck with Photos. What's irritating is the constant presence of the iPhoto update that won't update. Is there any way to remove/prevent it from showing as an update? Or, a way to actually update it?

Thanks.

To get rid of the notification wither trash the app or update it. Given that you haven't been able to unit, why are you keeping it?

Have not sent it to trash as that didn't seem to work for another poster.

But has for hundreds of others.

Failing that, contact App Store support. There's a link on the right hand side of the App Store window.
