Sound Keeps cutting out, and it gets weirder

Ok this is weird. But my Mac Pro has been solid since I got it. I've been using computers for nearly 25 years now, and I've never seen memory affect sound, but here goes.

I installled 2gb of new memory ... Kingston Fully buffered 1gb chips, reviews all said work great with mac pro. I am using a Motu 828 Mk II. Well since the new memory, my sound keeps cutting off every once in a while. The computer still recognizes the Motu as the sound device (through firewire), but no sound, and I have to reboot to get it back.

Has anyone had experience with the Motu (which didn't do this for the entire first month until memory) cutting out on the mac pro after a while, or does anyone know of a problem with sound cutting out on Mac Pros? Memory causing sound to stop (extremely weird)?

Thanks

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

evidently we're not alone. the only solution anyone there was given was "Reset your SMC" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304123 but as we all know that doesn't fix it (Apple suggested this too when I tired of trying to reach MOTU and called them).

Well I have been trying to call MOTU all day and all I get is a busy signal... I'll keep trying... does someone want to take this up with AppleCare and see if there is any better resolution on that side?

On a side note... let's say that it 's just not fixable for a while... what are you guys gonna go to as a backup solution for inputs? I am not fond of the presonus products, maybe mackie Onyx? anyone using the Apogee solution?

Has anyone tried using a different video card ? in the machine to see if we can narrow that down?

I now have an Apogee ensemble interface and no
problems with dropping sound anymore on the same
X1900 equipped mac.

Aaaaah. Very good news for those who thought there was an internal issue with their Mac Pro :-) This is definitely an issue MOTU will have to correct ! It doesn't seem that simple since it seems impossible to get them at the phone :-(

spending another 2k on top of a 4k machine on top of a 1k interface I already have THAT WORKED PERFECTLY is not an option, much less a "solution" in my book. That's bogus 😟 The finger-pointing between Apple and MOTU is really frustrating on top of that. I would venture to guess that this problem isn't limited to just ONE party, but it bothers me that neither want to tackle it.

I have the stock GeForce 7300 GT and the 828 interface and I have that particular problem of the sound cutting out. Actually, the only way for me to not have the sound cut out is to continuously have audio going through the outputs (via playing songs from my iTunes library). If I stop playback for just 10 seconds I lose output altogether. I have to reboot - which is very annoying. I feel a lot better now, though, that I found this thread. But in any regard, my 7300GT Mac Pro has this problem.

ok, thanks for the feedback. So here we are on the weekend, no tech support available.. except for maybe Apple care.

This is what I suggest:

1. A few of us need to work on the MOTU front, which is difficult since they are always busy. I have only gotten through once. So we should coordinate together on that front.

2. THose of us with APple care, should focus on that front to make sure they are aware, and here noise about it, so that we can get this issue resolved quicker.

I personally feel that this issue shouldbe solved quickly.. come on, these are pro systems.. MOTU is a close partner with Apple, and it works on all machines except for this one.. and oddly, it seems to be an isolated few... it doesn't make any sense... maybe apple will have to send us new machines... we can prove they work on other computers.. but not on these...

I will work on the APple care front starting next week on Monday... what do you guys think?
