Mine is iPhone 5 and my rear camera stopped working after up gradation to IOS8 from iOS7. Since then I was waiting for any fix or upgrade, but did not get any proper fix. I also done other tricks, which were mentioned in other threads. 😠😠😕 If anyone interested, then they can try these tricks. I am tired doing all these.

Its definitely software related. I've had mine in the shop and the advice given was its probably hardware related which naturally left me worried half to death. I followed your lead and downloaded the free app Camera Awesome and hey presto my camera is working fine using that app.

Thanks for the fix you're a gent. I guess I'll use it until Apple come along with another IOS update.

I'd also like to thank the shop for its ever so helpful fob off which all said probably saved me quite a bit of cash.

I m dealing with the exact SAME problems you all are dealing with. I rely on my iPhone for video communication (I use sign language to communicate) and nothing's working. When I try to set my camera to front, it came on fine - then when I try to set it back, it stops. Flashlight is very essential in my life, and it's zilch. I am trying all the ridiculous recommendations and see if I could get it to work. It's definitely that 8.3 that is causing all this mumbo jumbo. Sighs.

I bought an iPhone 5 off of craigslist and thought I got the wrong end of the deal until I found this discussion. My back camera also doesn't work on my iPhone 5. The front does, but not the back. It's just black, and sometimes it'll switch to the front camera when I press the button, and other times it won't. Apps like redlaser and snapchat automatically use the front camera, somehow knowing that the back is non-functional. I'm hoping as well this is an iOS 8.3 bug and will be patiently waiting for iOS 8.4 and finally iOS 9, where Apple has promised to work on bugs rather than add a good amount of features (which barely works). I wish that Apple would release one every 2 years to work out the bugs a produce quality again. It hasn't been the same since Steve left.

Same problem in my case. It happened yesterday out of the blue.

I have tried to:

- Hard reset

- push the lens/screen

- erase content and restore from backup (using iTunes)

Result: 100% Failed. I wonder if it's a SW "feature" or just poor QA..

Phone details: iPhone 5 (Model ND297DN/A) running iOS 8.3 (build 12F70). I had 183MB free storage when it died. Currently I've cleaned up and 5.1 GB are available.

I just got an iPhone 5s for my 7 day T-Mobile test drive and, of course, the flashlight and camera are dead. Similar symptoms already described.

  • On iOS 8.0.2
  • Flashlight does not work at all
  • When going to camera, rear camera does not work and screen just freezes
  • Front camera works, but only in the mode it's in. If I try to change from photo to square or video, etc, it freezes
  • Tried Camera Awesome, but it just crashes
  • Tried resetting by pressing home/top buttons, but no luck
  • Can't do a restore b/c it's not my phone

Oh well...
