iPhone 4s Randomly Rebooting Post 8.3 Update

The onset of the problem:

Updated to iOS 8.3 over the air through wifi download on a full battery of 96%. Started it before I went to work. Forgot about it. Got to work 40 minutes later, iPhone at Apple logo. Didn't think much about it. Put it next to the computer, did something else. Noticed it in a constant reboot cycle because it eventually drained the battery and died.

Attempted to halt the reboot process by pressing home and power buttons simultaneously after it had enough power to boot again. This did nothing to correct the reboot cycle.

Attempted to get in to DFU mode. Was successful. iTunes was able to recognize it and aware that an update was required, or possible full reset. Attempted to complete the update through iTunes. The updated appeared to be successful, yet entered in to the same reboot loop as before.

Again I attempted to halt the reboot process by pressing home and power buttons simultaneously. This did seem successful and actually loaded the lock screen after which it rebooted again. It loaded the lock screen again and I was able to unlock it. I got this error: your selected cellular network is no longer available. You can choose a different network in settings.

I connected to wifi and the device rebooted again. Got back to lock screen, home screen, and eventually after what seemed a lot of toggling between edge, GSM, 3G, and nothing, it eventually locked on to my carrier. Back in business (I thought).

Tried to get iTunes to connect, couldn't connect. When it did start to connect, everything was grayed out. Eventually after several more reboots it finally connected, and I was able to get a backup off of it. Took a few interrupted sessions, but I did get one.

Now it appears to reboot randomly. When I plug it in to the charger. When I plug it in to the computer. When its been plugged in to the computer, already rebooted, and reboots again for good measure. Same when on the charger. After it has been on a while it will just reboot when I haven't touched it. Sometimes it goes through a couple cycles, but eventually comes back. Just recently it locked up when I was on speakerphone and tried to use the keypad. After pressing the show keypad button, it was half highlighted/half not, the UI became unresponsive to touch, and eventually rebooted.

My only other thought is to do a factory reset on the phone and start again, but I really don't want to lose a lot of my app data. Any one else have or had something similar going on?

My 4s was doing this after installing 8.2 - However last night the phone prompted me to update my carrier settings (EE - UK) and it has now stopped!

I do not know how you force a carrier settings update, but worth looking into. I think the reason is that EE now use Wifi to make calls when the signal is poor, must be some update?

To make sure that this is not software related, set it back to factory settings, without using any backup data afterwards. Set up the rest of the personal settings manually and test the phone.

If the phone works as before the update, restore from the latest backup. If the problem comes back, the backup data contained corrupt data, causing your issues.

If it still does not work, this is a hardware issue and the phone has to be serviced by Apple or an Authorized Apple Service Provider:

I seem to have this problem as well, and only after iOS 8.3. Repeatedly reboots while charging/connected to Mac. My workaround which seems to work: ensure the screen is turned ON while charging/connected. Go to Settings>General>Auto-Lock, set to "Never". Then turn down the brightness all the way to save your battery power. You can revert to your original Auto-Lock setting when done charging. Hope this helps. We need a fix for this annoying bug asap.

I also have an iPhone 4S and am getting the reboot problem while charging. I just updated to iOS 8.3 and was prompted to install new Telus carrier settings on Sunday. I don't seem to have battery problems (although it's possible my battery is draining a bit more than usually).

I reset all my network settings and just reconnected solely to my own home WiFi.

Hopefully we can get some traction and a fix. Thanks in advance Apple!

POTENTIAL FIX - Turn off Field Test Mode

My iPhone 4s started to reboot/restart repeatedly after installing both 8.3 and the AT&T carrier update. For about a week, I've been leaving the screen out while charging (set to minimum brightness) to prevent the restarts. I think I may have found a more permanent solution. 6 months to a year ago I entered Field Test Mode and set it up to allow me to see the numerical value for my cellular strength (see link below about Field Test Mode). Today I turned off. My iPhone has not restarted once during its current charge. To turn it off go to the phone dialer and dial *3001#12345#* and then hit call. When Field Test Mode starts hit the home button. After that you will no longer be able to see numbers in the signal strength bar. So far I've made it from 35% charge to 75% charge without a single restart. Fingers crossed.

Both myself and a co-worker are having the same problem, on iPhone 4s', with an onset of the IOS 8.3 release. It does not always happen, but it happens enough to be very annoying (especially since when it reboots it buzzes, and I charge it next to my bed at night... even a few wakeups at 2:00 AM are too many!

Both phones are in good condition, with good batteries (mine will last a few days in standby, and a full day with heavy use).

This is very annoying, please fix this in the next update, Apple!

Hi pedromg -- a quick update -- I resetted my 4S settings and it has been stable for a few days now when charging/connected to the computer. Try the following (you won't lose apps or data, however your phone settings will revert to the default): Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. This seems to have resolved my infinite-reboot problem.

Thanks man! I just did that, hope it works, I'll keep the thread updated it the problem comes back.

I had already force reseted my iphone (home button+lock button), and I had no reboots for a few days, but then they came back.

There's also the iphone total restore, which I am gonna leave as a last resort if I really need it and/or Apple takes too long to fix.
