Mail option is missing from share menu

"Mail" is missing from the share menu. When I go to the Extensions preferences in the System Preferences it is checked buy also grayed out. On Apple.Com it clearly shows in the example that Mail is present in the Share dropdown menu. I verified that my Mail account is correct. I have also tried Apple's instructions on this page: If sharing options and Markup are missing after you install OS X Yosemite - Apple Support. Still nothing works. The Apple Help file even says this:

Share Menu

Select the items that you want in the Share menu, and in the Social widget in Today view in Notification Center.

The Share menu is available in several apps, including Safari, Contacts, and the Finder. If an item is selected, but you don’t see it in an app’s Share menu, then you can’t use that item to share in that particular app.
Only items that allow posting or messaging can appear in the Social widget.

So, it would seem from this that Mail is not available in Photos? I find that hard to believe. I would be nice to still be able to email a photo directly from the new Photos App. Any other help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The "Mail" share icon will only show if you are using Apple Mail as your default mail client _and_ Apple Mail is set as the "Default Email Reader" in Apple Mail.

Open Apple Mail, and goto preferences, under the general tab, the first selection is "Default Email Reader". If this is set to Gmail, or Outlook, etc, it wont show in the share menu in Photos. The solution is to add your email account to Apple Mail, and change this Default Email Reader selection to Apple Mail. Then, it will show in the share menu in Photos!

This is frustrating to say the least, as many of us don't want to use Apple Mail. After you add your Gmail account to Apple Mail ( or whatever account you actually want to send the email's with when you share photos ) you can configure Apple Mail to automatically send messages, or do them manually if you want to avoid downloading all your Imap emails, etc.

Hope this helps anyone who is wondering why such a basic feature isn't working. Apple, please fix this! 😉

I know this topic is about mail not showing up in the share menu for Photos, but the same problem exists in Finder. Mail does not show up even though it is my default and all.

I found this in the Apple support communities and it worked for me.

Dear all

this has helped to get all share menu options

1. open the terminal

2. go to terminal window

3. paste the following link

and just run , finally you got all menu sharing options , it worked

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed

With El Capitan running for a couple of weeks now - all of a sudden the MAIL option disappears. I ran the Terminal command again and all was restored but not sure when or why we lost it.

Apple terminal solution worked perfectly!

Thank You SOOOO much. This problem was driving me crazy and everyone wanted to talk about other mail programs which I was not using. Hooray!

I have tried your solution by pasting the text into Terminal. I get "No such file or directory" even though I can navigate to it in Finder. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Disregard my previous post. I apparently had an extra space in the text. When I removed the space, it worked. Thanks anyway. The original tip was very helpful. I never would have figured this out on my own.

the extra space is in the word LaunchServices. When you paste, it looks like LaunchSe rvices.

The full corrected text to paste is :

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed

Once I figured it out, it worked. However, the problem came back sometime later and I had to run it again, so keep this handy in case you need to do it again.

UPDATE- When I just posted this message it looks like this forum is breaking the line in exact same place (after the "e" in "LaunchServices", so it might be the forum that is putting that extra space in so double check in NOTES or some other text editor before pasting.

When I change my default AOL email over to Apple Mail, as soon as I leave the mail preference page it reverts back to AOL. How do I get it to stay on Apple Mail please?

Apple, this is beyond annoying. Please fix this.

I shouldn't have to insert Code in a terminal window just to drag and drop pictures from the new Photos App to either Mac Mail or even Gmail in ANY browser!
