Photos, Smart album to find photos with unknown faces?

I try to systematically name faces I want to name or delete those I don't want. In iPhoto, I've had a smart album with the criterion that Face is unnamed, showing me all photos where there faces I have not named.

In Photos, the option to select "unnamed" when choosing Face is does not exist. I've not been able to find any workarounds to create a smart album that achieves the same.

Anyone with ideas how this can be done?

It's not a fix but I have been trying to go through my entire library trying to find all of the photos that have detected, but unnamed faces. I just realized if I select all of the detected but unnamed faces and assign them a random, unused name, it will group them all as one person in faces and then it's easier to go through the photos and either appropriately name people or remove the erronous detection.

The ability for smart albums to find detected but unnamed faces would be ideal. It's ridiculous it's not a feature.

Here is a workaround, that actually worked pretty well for me:

  1. In Photos, go to Album > Faces
  2. In the lower part of the window, click to select one of the suggested faces
  3. Press cmd-a on your keyboard to select all faces
  4. Press Enter on your keyboard to enter a name.
  5. Enter the name "Unknown" in the diaglogue, and press enter (or the "Continue" button).
  6. If Photos finds faces similar to those you just added, click the button "Add and Continue".

You may have to repeat this several times before all your unkown faces have been named "Unknown".

Since all your unknown faces will now have the name "Unknown", you can go through them one by one, giving the right name to each person and remove any unwanted faces. As you do this, the faces will be automagically removed from the group "Unknown" and added to the correct person instead.

Hope this helps!

Huh. Ok, this isn't working the way I thought it was. It's not finding every photo with unnamed faces, and it's finding photos that *had* unnamed faces even after they're deleted or named.

I have no idea what Photos is actually doing here, but it seems useless after all.

Weirdly, if you bring up the "Info" panel (inspector?) for a photo, it will show faces that are tagged, even if there are none shown on the picture with "View"/"Show Face Names" enabled. Maybe it's some old data from an earlier version of the face tagging?
